Is the bike a "field bike", as in has it been stripped of all road going parts , lights, numberplate and such ?
If so I'd be weary of it being a stolen bike.
Very easy to pass off a stolen on/off road bike as a field bike , I wouldn't take to much hope from it still having it's numbers intact either, they might of just been lazy !

Intrigued as to how you're so sure?

Without the registration and engine/frame numbers there is no way that you could have performed any sort of HPI check on it. The only other way of certainty is to know the complete history of the bike, from new, by knowing everyone in the chain of owners.

You contact the DVLA and you pay for an ident search. They search the data-base to see if they have that VIN number already recorded.

May come up as having been registered, but scrapped. May come up as registered, and unscrapped, and the name of the last recorded keeper, who possibly may be an insurance company.... it may also come up on the stolen vehicle data-base, depending on when it might have been stolen.

That will inform the options.

If it is 'clear' and associated with a valid registration, you can apply for THAT registration, paying another fee, to transfer keeper-ship into your name, BUT, they are obliged to try and contact former keeper..... who may be an insurance company, and id they have never 'sold' the salvage, become it was an unrecovered theft, THEN you are in a sticky legal situation...

If they cut up rough, ins co could send an agent round to collect the bike, as it Is thier property, and you could be left to argue your case with coppas over handling stolen goods....

Or they may suggest you might like to 'BUY' the 'salvage' from them...

Alternatively... you could get the bike fixed up to an MOT able condition, and attempt to register it as though it has never had a UK registration.

Needs to be made MOT able first, which means spending money; THEN you have to get the bike 'providenced' and get a dating letter from some-one like Mitsui Yamaha who will tell you exact age and model of the bike from numbers, or a 'dating-letter' from a recognised Authority like Vinatge Japanese Motorcycle Club...

More form filling, to apply for registration, AND during that process you are likely to be requested to pay for and present the bike to a VOSA inspection center for a VIC or Vehicle Identity Check, where THEY will run numbers through data-bases to check that the bike IS what you are suggesting AND that its neither been written off or stolen.....

And you MAY or may not be leaving that COSA centre WITH the bike, because IF it is stolen or scrapped, they may NOT let you remove it, or give you a registration, either an original DVLA number awarded when new or a new re-registration number......

Pays your money, takes your chances, but it is a DT, and they are OFT stolen..... I know mine went recently!

Did you get a receipt from the seller with his details on? URL for the ad if found on an online classified board? Just thinking that if it is stolen the law will want to know where it came from & you'll have that to pass onto them. Buying a bike like a DT with no reg is a bit risky tbh, I brought a bike with no V5 but I did an HPI online prior to buying so I had a good idea that it wasn't 'reported' stolen at least. As Mike says, pays your money, takes your chance.

Sounds VERY suspicious here, a 125CC dirt bike the most nicked type of road bike and also, the previous owner has just binned the logbook and number plate?

Stolen written all over it. The FREE way of checking, is to write down the numbers and go to your local cop shop, but they WILL want the bike to be handed to them if they do find it to be stolen. So just say you're about to buy it or something to get out of them taking it.

A lot of thieves don't grind the numbers off of stolen bikes, so they can sell them. A lot of people on forums and selling websites fall for these checks. NEVER buy a project without a V5 or number plate!
