Some insects and animals create venom/poison for the purpose of killing prey or a predator.

But they're insects / animals. It's not like they have access to a laboratory where they can research what will and won't kill something and then work to develop it. How could they have possibly evolved to even understand what chemicals will kill another insect/animal, much less actually be able to create that for themselves?

I put that forward as proof we were all created and designed by a higher being.

Taste yuk. You lived and had kids. They then tasted even worse and it went on. As for the killing. Bad breath knock victim out and it went on.
There was an animal that Darwin went to bring back here. The only description we have of it was that it tasted nice. It is now extinct.

Hahah. Animals and Humans are weak. The smallest chemical imbalance can kill. Natural selection at its finest.

God doesn't exist. Deal with it.

Did those same insects/animals exist 60 million years ago in exactly the same configuration? No, they didn't, therefore they've evolved into their current state.

As Marjay said, God doesn't exist. Stop trying to prove that he does, it's redundant.

I put this forward as proof that you simply don't understand even the most basic ideas about evolution, nor do you have much of a grasp of the immensity of the timescales it deals with.

Read more and think a bit harder.

I'm going to assume this is all a joke but if it is not, then I would be happy to explain how evolution works Shocked

A lack of understanding is the key to the creationists' continuing support...anyone that actually understands how evolution happens should have no problem accepting it. If however you go down the red neck american route of asking why "monkeys" aren't giving birth to humans now then I can see how intelligent design makes more sense Laughing

It's odd how the debate polarises into two camps: pure evolution or pure creation. How about the middle ground, the creation of a mechanism that proceeds with evolution? Aka the universe.

I'm not saying evolution precludes the existence of god or any other creation mechanism. I'm not even saying that it's necessarily correct.

The point is though that as a way of explaining the massive variation and impressive adaptation and specialisation in species it works absolutely perfectly. Can't prove that that is how it happened now obviously but it faultlessly shows how it could have happened and therefore seems highly likely to be how it did happen.

Plenty of room to believe in the initial intelligent creation of life and the universe though before that if you so choose (which I think is the less fundamental christian's view now anyway isn't it?), it's just that variation in species seems likely to be by evolution and has no need for design.

PC programmers did it with a game, where algorythms created viable and random entities. If I recall correctly it was possible to guide variations by selectively breeding and/or manipulating 'DNA'.

It's pretty clear DNA is a code, and is so described by scientists. The argument becomes only: accidental or deliberate?

Nobody would think a car the accidental product of a fully automated car factory, and I do not consider DNA an accidental product of the universe. It seems almost entirely self-evident that the universe is a mechanism. Such complex structures (the universe and DNA) cannot be the products of accident, and our own experiences with mechanisms/forms we have created tend to give weight to that analysis. A rock on the beach is an accident; the same rock carved into a statue is not. Smile

finally! Someone with whom I can agree when it comes to this age old discussion.

I fail to understand why people seem to think there are only two camps. Full on creationists tend to aggravate me when they shove it down your throats. However, what aggravates me even more, to no end, is the sense of superiority and smugness that evolutionists walk around with. They fail to see that evolution remains a theory. Newton's laws are laws, Darwin's evolution is a theory. A very strong and convincing one, but still a theory. We have not been around long enough to see evolution at work, we are merely interpreting the past.

I just hate the way that if someone says "I Believe in god or a higher being", hordes of smug evolutionists suddenly turn up to belittle, mock and tell that person they are so stupid to believe in such a being.

Not if there is a selective pressure by the wind and water that erodes it to shape it into a statue Wink Imagine you have a mechanism that destroys all the rocks that aren't shaped like statues and you have a massive time scale and huge number of rocks. You would expect to find many now...

It does make sense that DNA is an accident. Honestly, I don't want to talk about this because we will head for another 100 page argument Laughing If you read up on the formation of the first replicating molecule (or how such a thing can exist) then it's a really clear logical chain of progression to DNA and evolution. It leaves plenty of room for creation theories to get to that first spark of life however, if you so choose.

Long time ago before people were people and way before dinkysaurs were stomping around there were little fishies in the water. Oddly enough these little fishies came into being because all this bacteria and single celled creatures clumped together over the course of thousands of years and turned into fishies.

One day the little fishies were exploring and they stumbled across land. One said to the other "I wonder what that thing is?" and pointed above the surface with his little fin and off he went to explore. Being a little fishy he swam to the surface and launched himself with his little tail onto the rocks.

Sadly he died but his friend latched onto the idea, went and told his friends and family in the little fishy town and spoke to the mayor. Not everyone believed him when he told them about this place above the water. Those that did went to explore but they never came back. They settled down by the waterline and kept throwing themselves at the rocks. Thousands of fishies died but one day, thousands of years later, a fishy landed on the rocks and didnt die.

Within a few thousand years many little fishies were living on the rocks when one decided to venture further. Sadly he died. Apparently he fell off a rock into the water and drowned in a bizzare twist of fate. Over thousands of years these stranded rock dwelling fishies grew limbs to deal with the now fatal water and made it onto the greenery.

Some bloke was sitting under a tree throughout those thousands of years and wrote it all down. Darwin his name was, known to his friends as Charlie the Heathen.

There we have it boys and girls of BCF. The evolution theory in a nutshell. No god was involved.

As for the beasties that bite and kill mo'fos it is the same process as the fishy story.

Humans are top of the food chain simply because we have evolved in such a way to utilize our environment. In the grand scheme of things we are a pathetically weak species but we have evolved in ways that allow us to adapt and use resources at hand. We only have to hear about the people killed by sharks, animals etc to realize just how weak we are. I do believe we will keep evolving when we need to. At the moment we do not need to. We've hit a balancing point between our environment and our species. Much the same as a shark has not changed for millions of years. It doesnt have to. Same with crocs etc. Some animals have found the natural balance and their evolution stops.

TL DR. What Marjay said Laughing

Newtons laws are a theory
Thermo dynamics are a theory
Gravity is a theory

What is your point?
Unlike creationism, scientists don't label all their findings as 'fact', it's a theory, a theory that works.

But the point is that literally every element of the theory of evolution is known to be possible and to actually happen. I believe you can even see signs of evolution happening in species to this day. You can't ever prove how species came to exist but when you have one theory with no recourse to anything that can't be shown to be possible against another theory that requires you to believe in some form of creation (which definitely does require recourse to something that can't be shown to definitely exist or happen) it seems obvious to go with the first.

It's a little like saying if you push a rock with your hand, did it move because of the force exerted by you (which can be shown to exist) or did it move because of a hitherto unknown rock magentism from some external force on the other side of the universe? Either is possible but which you think the more likely?

Ultimately, this is not a creation vs science debate. Evolution doesn't need to preclude creation if that's what you choose to believe, but it certainly makes it seem likely that if there was design or creation it was in the early stages, creating the universe, rather than in the insignificant shaping of a few life forms on one measly planet.

I honestly think it is incredibly easy to explain evolution, right back to the appearance of life itself, in a way that any intelligent person could understand. Once you see how easy a way for it to happen it is, then you might not see the need for any far more complex explanation. I mean bloody hell...even the catholic church accepts evolution these days.

Be honest...people on this thread, of the ones that don't accept the theory of evolution...do you actually fully understand it? To put it another way, does anyone on here that fully understands it not think it was how species diverged?

Nicked from a YouTube comment:
"There is a basic dishonesty in comparing the theory of evolution to the theory of gravity. As Dawkins said, if you doubt the latter, you are invited to jump out of a window (of a very low building) and see that it is true. What simple test can one propose for evolution? One can't.
Evolution is an inference based on tangential evidence. It is judged by its explanatory power and its ability to predict. One can predict what happens if he jumps out of a window. The same cannot be said of evolution."

And check this thread. "Sick of Butt-Hurt People"'s comment is an interesting one. https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20120330202337AAn2x5t

This actually is one of the problems scientists have in these sort of faith vs logic arguments.

The language of science is open to possilibities...things are described in terms of most likely probabilities. You don't state evolution as a fact as you can't ever prove it really, but it's overwhelmingly likely to be correct. On the other hand, design is presented as definite and inarguable by those of faith.

In reality, in scientific language, evolution would be a theory, intelligent design would be at best a hypothesis. And a very weak one at that as there is literally no evidence for it.

Thumbs Up THIS! And I'm happy to keep it as a theory, despite creationists using the word "theory" to try and debunk anything that doesn't fit with their biblical explanations. The Big Bang is also a theory, and one with which I don't hold much sway with, 'cos it's as unbelievable as the Christian interpretation of god.

Einstein's (and Hetzer's) perception of god is far more believable if you believe that "god" is the power of the universe and everything that exists therein. Why Christian's believe that this unfathomably massive universe was created in 6 days a few thousand years ago just for the benefit of little old us (as Pinky says, a weak little species) by a bearded bloke in a frock, is beyond me...

"No evidence for it". Other than the evidence of the material reality of a thing. If you took a car to a tribe in the Amazon jungle (one that had had no previous interaction with or knowledge of us lot) and dumped it in their village (sneaky like) what would they make of it? Let's assume they were able to analyse it sufficiently with their eyes and touch and reasoning of their brains...they might come to understand it as we understand our bodies. But without knowledge of the factory from where it came, by which it was manufactured, not to mention all the events preceding that (design, devlopment, history and etc etc etc), what then would they make of it? Would they declare it "an accident"? I think not. Probably they would declare it an 'act of god'. Especially if they got it started and into gear. Laughing

There is no logical, rational or scientific reason to regard the human body, or the universe, any differently. Both are clearly complex mechanisms, both of which we understand to a point (the human body much more clearly than the universe). To call either "accidents" is counter-intuitive. By all our understanding no complex mechanism is "accidental", not even plants. All biological mechanisms are products of a 'factory process' and it does not hold rational water to call that process itself an accidental by-product of an accidental universe...why apply a different standard to the complex mechanism known as the universe? Everything is a product of mechanistic process except the universe? The apparent source of all factory processes was itself the accidental result of no process at all? That's like saying that all the parts inside a car are clearly designed and made by a process except the shell, which just popped out of nowhere.

I think it's fair to assume there are countless trillions of planets that are capable of forming and sustaining complex biological entities, with a percentage of those entities having achieved the ability to host consciousness (sapience, self-awareness). That's what the universe was made for, coded for.

Don't agree Thumbs Down But we don't need to argue through that again Laughing At least say that's what you believe the universe was made for though.

This comes back to the thing about stating a hypothesis as a fact. Nothing wrong with putting forward a hypothesis but you can't really state it with certainty unless it's something that can be proved categorically.

Of course I can't prove it, but my belief is based upon rational analysis of all the evidence currently available to me (internally and externally derived). Having weighed all that evidence I use a process of elimination, where I discount that which is less likely until I'm left with that which is the least least likely, no matter how unlikely it sounds.
