Just had a look at the mates celica as there was a noise when he was braking Very Happy

Meh.

Here's what happens to a vented disc, when the metal-on-metal action generates so much heat, the outer friction surface parts company from it's dividing fins and totally disintegrates.

And yes, he had continued to drive it, for some time..........

Seized caliper?

I don't know if the Celica shares its calipers with the MR2, but they're proper buggers for seizing calipers.

I had to change every caliper on my old Mk2 MR2 during the few years I owned it. I did, however, drive it pretty hard pretty much everywhere.

Yep, seized calipers my father in law used to run a hi-ace and if someone else changed his brakes the time before I did the discs and pads would look like that everytime I changed them. The pic's are bad but from experience the average driver will let their brakes get in that state before they get them looked at.
