I have given the option to buy a Kawasaki KH125, in fantastic condition, from what I can see.

It has
- 7000 miles
- New brakes, new suspension, new clutch levers.
- 9 months MOT.
- Made in 1988.

For £400.

I'm looking for a bike that:

- Is reliable
- Isn't going to fall apart on the way back from London to Cardiff.

The question I'm asking the experienced riders and part-time mechanics of BCF is.... Have I found the right match? Should I take it for a service?
Is there anything I should look for?

I'm definitely a novice at it all, I know my way around a Suzuki Gn125 apart from the engine, but this is a 2-stroke and looking at it today I knew very little apart from it's in a lot better shape that my old GN125.

Ideally I want a younger GN 125 or YR125, but they seem hard to come by at my budget (£500)

I'm dying to get back on the road, but I do not want it falling apart on me, as I would be out of money and unable to take my test in August.

If its got tax and test bit his fucking arm off!

Air-cooled tow stroke, they are as tough as they come and MUCH more bike for your money than an RXS, though a few parts are harder to come by, other wise most service spares aren't much different.

VERY well regarded little bikes among my generation; they were cheap. rugged and packed a punch well above thier weight.

Many a TZR125 has been humbled by a little KH!

Can't speak to the bike, but please be aware that a bike of that age and capacity won't be covered by most of the breakdown services.

in terms of pure reliability, this may seem like the world's moronic question to a biker but:

Does the old age entail a more likely future of breakdowns than that of a newer bike? and to what extent?

thankyouthankyou for your replies.

UTTERLY dependent on condition & how you treat it.

People have brand-new bikes and they break down if they dont look after them.

Folk run 60 year old classics, and dont break down becouse they look after them.

KH?

Its a robust little low maintenence two-stroke, there ent MUCH to go wrong, you keep sticking petrol and two-stroke oil in it, until grinds to a halt, at which point it will probably need a rebore and new piston which a half trained monkey could DIY in a week-end...

After a couple of pistoms, may need the engine stripped and the crank overhauled, which fully trained monkey could do in a week.

Wheels, brakes, suspension, electricals, all same as any other bike.

Electrics are what normaly give gip on oldies, as connections corride and wires rot.

BUT look at work-shop.... MOST 'problems' with 'old' bikes which is anything over 10 years, really, are caused by the owners, either lack of maintenence or effing it up messing about not knowing what they are doing.

Buy the Haynes Manual, service it properly, treat it 'right', and provided its not a bit of prettily painted scrap when you start, NO reason to believe that it should be ANY less reliable than anything else out there, new or old.... a LOT of reson to suspect its likely to be MORe reliable, especially compared to sporty strokers, AND if it DOES need attension, its such a 'simple' little bike, it ought NOT be beyond the means of man to reasonably easily and cheaply remidy.

I would NOT bat an eye-lid buying an old KH, and one for £400 with tax and test I could hear running..... I would be biting his arm off and asking stupid questions later...

You dont get PROJECT bikes for that money, and usually are looking at Chinky shit that you KNOW will be unreliable, not a Jap, with a rep for reliability....
