Hi all,
Im getting my first bike very soon now just after my 18th and i just wanted some advice on the safety clothes that i can get, i obviously want something that is going to keep me dry and take some impact if i have a crash.
Since its a 125cc bike i doubt i will be going that fast but of course other cars could cause more harm than me so any help and info would really help,
Thank you Smile

There are many threads on this issue, but a quick recap of the main points:

Helmet is a legal requirement.
If you like your fingers, gloves are a given.

After that, body injuries seem to be more likely in the feet/legs and work their way up. So boots -> trousers -> jacket is a rough guideline to follow if you can't afford everything at once. Try to cover all exposed skin with reasonably hard wearing material.

If you're travelling long distances and/or go out on the bike for pleasure riding, leathers are your best bet (most protective), with an oversuit or two piece for rain.

If you're just doing short journeys to work or college then it is likely more practical to buy textiles, kevlar jeans or similar and perhaps some army surplus boots.
This is because you will look a plonker walking everywhere in a full set of leathers and will likely tire of putting them on for a 10 minute ride.
All the gear in the world is no use if you skip putting it on because you can't be bothered or it takes longer than the journey.

And remember that gear is not a substitute for safe riding. It should be treated as limited liability insurance.

Thanks guys, much help. I never even thought about the time it would take for leathers.
Im in a bit of a pickle since i would normally do short rides to work but i am actually planning on doing long journeys to :/
I guess i just need to think about it in the long term.

One in three road accidents happen a mile from home.

You're best getting proper gear and wearing it all of the time.

For me, that is: Helmet, Armoured Textile Jacket and Trousers zipped together, Armoured boots, Armoured gloves.

I wear it 99% of the time. Gloves and Helmet 100% of the time, with the exception of a quick run up and down the road to test the bike's working properly. The only other exception is when I volunteer my gear to the pillion who doesn't have any; I would rather them wear it than me.

Amen to that. I've been through a load of stuff, but half of it doesn't get worn any more and so is doing me a sum total of sod all good. I should really get on the 'bay...

Except for the helmet (and even that's debatable), you can grab everything you need used on eBay or Gumtree. Don't go mad buying My First Motorycle Outfit from your local bike shop: you won't know what you'll actually want or need until you've been riding for a while.

Seriously, ebay gear is the way to go.

I got a full set of gear comprising of 2 textile jackets (1 as new, 1 used), trousers (used), gloves (new), boots (new) and rain suit (new) for around 120 quid total. Everything was RST stuff except the oversuit (which was from HG) and it seems to be pretty good quality.

I don't bother wearing the trousers though, they make me sweat way too much. I think kevlar jeans would be more practical.

I blagged a helmet for free off a colleague, he bought it online a few years ago and it didn't fit! It was collecting dust in his shed.
