Notify on new Private Message/Always notify me of reply

I'm sure that "Notify on new Private Message" and "Always notify me of replies" are selected as OFF as default. ( am I right in saying this?) Do you think that these could be defaulted to ON?

The reason I say this is that there are quite a number of people who come on the forum post and never return. I think this may partly be because sometimes people find the forum whilst browsing the net, post and forget about it. Also I have sent someone a PM about a month ago and they have yet to read it, even though they have been back on the forum a number of times since. If "Notify on new Private Message" was default ON then they would know about it.

What do you reckon?

I'd rather not have my email spammed with messages by default, pretty sure other people would feel the same.

Well it could be turned off easily enough though. It's just that it seems that newbie types may not actually be aware of this option.
