hi all. for our wedding, one of our presents was an alu block...

Now, its been hollowed out, presents put in, a stopper turned, and put back in... and milled over...

See picture...

Now we want to open it of course.. but they havent given me any clues, apart from im not allowed to take anything from work, or bring it in to open it... apart from a file...

I really dont want to ruin it at all by opening it..

Ideas???

Super-glue a bar across the stopper bit (the circle?) and unscrew it.

Assuming it screws in in someway get one of those vacuum sucker glass lifters and use that to take out the stopper

or in similar vein araldite a large nut on to the stopper and twist or screw a bolt into the nut and pull

People that creative have probably also reversed the thread for comedy purposes.

Two of those little shower hook sucker things at either side and just twist. Try both directions though Wink

What does the writing on the side of it (the box) say?

Surely the solution is something to do with the file? Has them milling over the top of it burred the edges over the circular cap, so you just file out the burrs where the block and circular cap meet and the circle falls out?

them re-milling it, - was their attempt to hide the stopper. to make it harder to find how to get in it.

Writing is just happy wedding ect...

i can 98% say it wont be a screwed in cap..

More than likely nearly exactilly the same size or a little smaller than the opening, and pushed in. - knowing the machinists at work...

id presume the file 'solution' is because it would take a hell of a long time to do... when we started our apprentiship - we had to file every day all day for 2-3 months....

My suspicion is that this hasn't been done with an obvious way to get into it in mind. It isn't one of those chinese puzzle boxes. It's just been closed back up again, end of. No right or wrong answer, just a frustrated Jenks - therein lies the humour, for whoever made it.

I'd start by holding it down in a really hot bath and see if the combination of expanding metal and increased interior pressure pops the bung out.

I'd freeze the whole thing, and then use a hot air gun to try and force it to expand unevenly.
