As some of you may know I've been having problems with my Aprilia RX50.

Well I took it to the garage and it's now been confirmed that it is the crank bearings and seals.

The quoted price to repair is £500 and I can't pay that. So what shall I do?

Is it difficult to repair myself(considering I know nothing about mechanics)? Or should I ask around at garages?

Cheers.

depending on the year of bike and whether you want to buy a new piston too you are looking probably no more than £60-£70 in parts.

£15 quid full gasket set (ebay 290710863731)
£15 new piston (ebay 200572851566)
£20 crank bearing and seals (ebay 221027533212 )

pleaes note these are for an rx 50 with the d50b0 engine, the am6 engine pats are a little cheaper.

Thats £50 for all the parts you need the rest will be for gearbox oil, anti freeze lock tight gasket sealer etc.

The engine itself is a doddle to work on the most difficult part is finding the timing marks for the balance shaft as sometimes the dot hasn't been punched into the gear hard enough at the factory.

If you do decide to do the work yourself don't skimp on locktight and use gasket sealer even though the gaskets are new it would be a right bummer to full the fluids up and find a leak.

Thanks for your help.

It seems very complicated for me to do myself so I think I'd have to get the garage to do it. However I cannot see how it would cost over £500?

Is this a rip off?

Cheers.

As you can tell most of that is labour costs, perhaps taking the engine out and bringing it to them would bring your bill down.

Right I've seen on most 2 stroke it's behind the clutch basket, so remove that and should see seals, other side is fly wheel off stator plate and seals will behind that remove and replace all seals and sorted.

But the crank-case will still need to be split in order to replace the bearings...

Having said that, I did mine a while back and although it took a while I managed it. Smile

Miss that part, yep mine was in parts for first time since it left factory 22 years ago, still had original top end gaskets, bearings, seals, piston and possible clutch cable.

you could probably buy another running bike for that much , seriously if it was me i would be asking for a breakdown of all the costs or just take the bike elsewhere.

chances are they will still try charging for work allready done just don't let them take the piss,

honestly you could get a car engine re-conned for £800

If you're being quoted that amount for having the work done, you've nothing to lose by having a go yourself!

Whereabouts in the UK are you?

its not too hard but just label every thing and take your time and get blue gasket for between the cases.

I'm going to just get a new engine/bottom end and have it fitted cheaply.

If I can't find an engine at a reasonable price I'll try to do the crank seals.

Thanks for your advice everyone.

This!

and take plenty of photos before removing bits.
If you have the space, laying things out in the order they came off is also helpful.

the hardest part of the stripdown will be getting the flywheel off, the rest is just bolts and nuts.

Just need flywheel puller, and then to put back a clutch holder or fabricate some some thing.

Take your time and you'll appreciate the work you done and in future when needs reboring you know what you doing and save money

The bearings sometimes take a little persuasion too...but a blowtorch helps Smile
