Dropped my bike off at the dealership today to have something sorted, they lent me an identical bike for the day, rode out of the place, three miles down the road I get done for speeding, 40 in a 30, no excuses my fault I was an idiot.

Police issue me the ticket and fine, 3 points on my licence.

Now... I'm a learner. It's a provisional licence.

If I get 3 more points, do I have my licence revoked? Or does that not kick in until I actually pass my main test?

Also, if I pass my main test soon, and I've already 3 points on my licence, then I go on to get 3 more, do I lose my licence? Or Is it a case of getting 6 points after you get your full licence is what gets you banned?

Thanks guys,

as i understand it, if you get 6 points on your provisional then they carry over to your full licence when you pass your test, if you then get 1 more point on your licence in the first 2 year then you will have your licence revoked under the new drivers act

12 points on a provisional.

6 points within 2 years of passing a full test.

If you have <6 points on your provisional and then pass your test, they count towards the 6 points. If you have 6+ points then pass your test, get one more and you lose your licence.

1 - Slow down!

2 - Better obs!

3 - Yes those points will be transferred to your proper licence and if you get another 6 points in those 2 years you will fall foul of the New Drivers Act. (I think). I do not know if the provisional points will affect your insurance on a provisional licence, or on your new proper licence. But I suspect they will on your new proper licence.

4 - Be careful!

Ah I understand now, thank you. And yep it was utterly my fault, no excuses and I was completely in the wrong, won't be making that mistake again.

Also, should I inform my insurance company?

It isn't a ban for a recently passed licence. It gets revoked. It's like you never had it. You have to start over. No point doing that on a provisional so you're ok until you pass a test, then the 6-point rule kicks in. But any points you had before you passed count towards it. The only exception is if you're on 6 or more when you pass. At that point one *more* point will cost you your licence.

According to them, yes.

In practice, I wouldn't bother (and didn't, the last time I got my Speed Tax). It doesn't magically retcon the conditions under which they agreed the policy. Don't take that as any sort of advice though, ask arry or T.C.

By the way, if Plod come back to you later and serve you another NIP for riding without insurance, what's your answer going to be?

Why would I be riding without insurance?
