So I was overtaking a still lane of traffic this morning (I was overtaking in the other lane) and, as you approach the traffic lights, the lane with the traffic in splits in two - the left lane to turn left, the right to turn right.

As I was coming up to about the third car before the lights, I noticed my little gap where I would cut through to get into left hand lane. So I started braking, in hindsight clearly too hard, and turned at the same time as I was coming down to about 5-10 mph as I was doing this my back wheel locked up. It slid for about 2 seconds.

Was I lucky not to fall off? If you could ever get into a position where you did this completely under control and on purpose, it could be a lot of fun (but preferably not so close to other cars)

You'd last all of about four seconds in a real urban environment. Laughing

Rolling Eyes

Learn to ride properly. 1.) You shouldn't have locked up the rear tyre, 2.) You should be able to control a locked rear tyre.

Especially since you spend your life at <30mph speeds.

Clearly not if you were asking us how close to crashing you were. You obviously thought you were going to crash!

At 5-10 mph? Not a chance. No doubt you backed it in at 45° as well?

Locking up the rear is nothing, it is when the front locks that you need to worry. Wink

Nice of them Wink

On topic you didn't mention if it was wet. If not then you're really in trouble if/when you ride when raining/roads wet.

I'm minded of the wife talking about "the roundabout" in Shetland, singular.

How often do you have to change the candles in those lights?

Something interesting happened to me the other day.

I was riding my old vt500ef in the rain at about 20mph and pulled on the brakes fairly lightly coming up to a roundabout. The front started to slide out...so i let go of the brakes and then lightly pressed them again only for the same thing to happen again. As there was nothing coming at the roundabout i just kind of drifted out into the roundabout in the end but it was really odd.

I've been riding nearly 15 years on all kinds of bikes and never locked the front up. Its an old bike with pretty shitty brakes but still....it was very unexpected. Maybe it was a diesel spill?

Just thought i'd share. Laughing

Jesus, are you ok man? Sounds terrible. Write to the Guernsey press about it, this is perhaps THE headline of the year.

If you had locked up front wheel, you weren't upright! Lucky it was rear wheel.

At 5mph you would cover a distance of approx 14' 7&15/16" (about 4.47m in froggy units)...

Somehow doubt that, in a straight line you'd have shot right past the gap, if the back end was kicking out you'd have spun the bike more than 90 degrees around!
