SHARP rating, noise rating would be a nice idea too.

Because it is completely different depending which bike you are on.

Because it is different depending on the shape of your head, or how you've got the visor adjusted, or as Chris-Red says between different bikes...

There are too many factors to give any sort of accurate measurement. Just wear earplugs, simple.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Having a helmet that fits is the best way to lessen the noise. After that, use earplugs.

As said depends on bike and then on the screen. Original or aftermarket. Also depends on you, your size, how you sit on the bike etc.

However, that said some sort of generic wind tunnel test with all the helmets in same relative position could provide a useful indication. Trouble is certain makers may make a helmet just to look good in the test and be rubbish in actual use.

It wouldn't relate to the real world but then neither do 0-60 times, and everyone uses them as a guide to overall performance of sports cars.

As map says you'd need a standard for all helmets to be tested under, like a certain orientation and windspeed, then just put the db figure into the spec, people could compare and know that one measuring a lower db would be quieter.

FWIW I have just found such a test would be pointless as Airoh do helmets where the technical spec. includes the words: TOTALLY NOISELESS

Link to example if you click here.

Maps comment about the screens fitted to the bike seems very relevent as I get more wind noise thrown at me when I ride the Exup than when I ride the R1.The two screens are totally differant as are the noise levels, prompting me to wear ear plugs with my Arai lid when on a long ride on the Exup whereas it is not so necessary on the R1.
