depends on the shock, the one on my zxr 400 was easy to replace as once slackened off it wasnt compression. On the other hand the one on my TL needs a spring compressor to remove it while you slacken off the adjuster.
I doubt very much your spring is worn out, they do put them on a tester at maxton but im sure they have never seen one that has been worn out!

Wind the adjusters off and pop the spring off, i used plasticote to paint mine and it looks great.
Its worth changing the fork oil if you havnt done it yet, then get the suspension set up for your needs.

Edit:- maxton charged £129 to service mine and swap the spring, but that was 3 years ago.

That looks like a hydraulic pre-load adjuster, I'd be careful taking it off, I'm not entirely sure it is as straight forward.

Im quite sure the ride height ajuster slips off too. Give maxton a call, they are very helpful.

From experience with other shock so it may not be relevant. Wind the adjuster all the way up taking the tension out of the spring. At the bottom of the shock there might be a split collar Remove it and the spring will fall off. I used plastic paint to paint my spring, looks as good as new.

Not much help sorry. I sandblasted the spring to clean the old stuff off and the paint I got from a local paint supplier, it was two pack epoxy paint.
