a mate of mine has got a problem with his nsr. Starts up and revs perfect right up to red line. as soon as it's in gear and taken up to 4-5000 rpm the rev counter goes down to 0 and back up to 5000 repeatedly and wont go past it in all gears. any ideas???

Does the bike still actually rev fine.. just not display it?

I presume he is using the electric start?... That can be a sympton of a low/no battery, but if there's enough power to start it, then it shouldn't be a problem.

no it doesn't rev past 4-5000 rpm display or engine and it is a electric start but brand new battery on it.

You could try changing the spark plug. My NSR started to do that (halfway across the main bridge in my city) then the engine completely died on me.

I would sit there in first (clutch in) then the bike revved to about 4-5000 then dropped to normal. When I tried to pull off it would die on me. Pushed it back home and fiddled with the spark plug. I noticed there was a very large gap where the spark generates so I knocked it back down to what the manual recommended and this seemed to work. It has never done it since. You could just buy a new spark plug as it's cheap though! Very Happy

Sounds kind of similar to what happens to the bike you are describing! Hope it helps you mate! Very Happy

That doesn’t sound too good dude! Sad Maybe you could take it to a garage and just ask their opinion, see what they say. Just ask their opinion before you get them to service it as this will cost a bomb! If they think it is really serious then get them to have a more thorough inspection.
