1. Buy some memory foam type material or similar, i bought these:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/160780211693?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

2. Cut circles from them. I did two circles for each ear, tucked them into the ear moulds in the helmet. I then cut a much larger peice which tucks between the helmet inside shell and the cushioning. It doesnt fall out:

Greatly reduces wind noise. Hope this helps someone

Nope, its memory foam, it moulds around the ears.

Yeah, but only by being squished by your ears surely!

Cunningly simple idea though, and cool if it works. I'll stick with my ear plugs though Thumbs Up

To be honest i did do a long google search to find and buy a product which already does this, but there isnt one. One website sells some memory foam inserts to make the helmet more comfortable, but not around the ears.
It does press against the ears a bit, but they work more by sound deadening the helmets walls, so wind noise from outside and also coming inside the helmet dont reach your ears as much.

I`m not convinced that this new method will give enough protection, especially with all the movement the helmet/head goes through during normal riding conditions ie: looking left/right. Surely these new memory foam pads will allow some leakage during normal use. But on the plus side, as opposed to earplugs which only reduce noise entering via the ear canal, memory foam may help reduce the conductive noise that can be transmitted to the inner ear via the area of flesh and bone around the ear canal

Well my helmet is a really good fit, it just seems they skimped on padding around the ear area abit which lets it down. It was only £90 though so still budget category, but it isnt the quietest of helmets.
Looking left/right doesnt alter anything because the padding is larger than my entire ear, so even when the helmet moves slightly, the ear is still protected.
Its not as quiet as some good earplugs but i find it lets me hear enough to stay safe, i found earplugs were both annoying to put in/take out/remember to keep, and too restricting with sounds.

Nice idea, I like it.

I was kinda hoping your idea might have been a 'skirt' that clips in to the bottom of the helmet and makes more of a seal around your neck... I've noticed Arai in particular leave a massive gap and it's noisy as holy hell! There's a rubber seal around the bottom of the lid, I'm sure a skirt could be attached to this with some stretchy (neoprene?) material.

I'll buy one off you when it's done. Smile

That's already on the market https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BIKE-IT-MOTORBIKE-MOTORCYCLE-UNIVERSAL-NEOPRENE-LOWER-HELMET-SKIRT-GHOSTBIKES-/380441894517?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item58941a9e75

If the helmet is moving on your head while looking left/right... Then your helmet is not a good fit and you need to get a new one.

Think of it hitting the floor, its going to twist on your head Shocked

This is shite.

Have you tested your 'invention' to measure, by a recognised standard, what noise it blocks?

I guess not.
I assume you tried it on your noggin and the sound 'you' heard was reduced.
In 'your' opinion this 'is as good as proper earplugs'.

I say, 'is it fcuk.'

Yes, he ought to stick microphones in his ears and show us a 'before and after' graph, but what's quiet for one person on one bike might be deafening for a different person on a different bike, which is why there's no standard test.

Noise is subjective at the best of times. If the OP has found that this works for him, then smashing. Worst comes to worst, someone else tries it and finds that it does bugger all for them and has wasted the cost of two small pieces of foam.

No. There is a standard for noise dB. It is a measurable parameter. As is light, heat, and cetera.

What is not heard/perceived is not less damaging.

No, i tested it by putting it on and riding my bike, and it worked, is that a problem?

I guess not.

You guessed correctly, i must be one of the only 21 year old lads without a pair of db monitoring microphones Rolling Eyes retard.
