Looking at a 2000 Sachs 650 roadster, best price £480, 8000 miles, no leaks, or damage that I can see, some slight surface corrosion on engine fins, but looks and sounds OK.

Pics not great I know, but any opinions?

Parts for sachs bikes were difficult to come by before they went bust. Probably impossible now seeing as they don't make anything but scooters now.

So what is the state of the exhaust (headers and silencer), shocks, brakes?

Should you wish parts for these are they easy to source?
I do not know if you can mix and match parts from other (say Japanese) bikes if there is a problem.

Looking at this uk site it appears only supported bike is the MadAss.
Looking at the German Sachs site it looks like the roadster isn't a current model.
However, if you have contacts in Germany then maybe not an issue.

While having something different has its appeal there is something to be said for going with a major make in terms of parts and support.

Having said that for that money or a bit less I'd probably give it a try as a runaround. Nothing ventured and all that. What is the insurance quote like?

Just some thoughts, you did ask for opinions.

It's the sort of bike that I might buy on impulse, which should be warning enough. Very Happy

Eh, £480, if it's a runner and there's nothing obviously about to rot through or fall off, how much can you lose on it? Just leave it in a ditch when it dies rather than pouring any money into it.

DR650 engine so engine spares won't be an issue.

Fork seals, brake pads, wheel bearings, C&S will all be generic items anyway, so no issue there either.

It's cheap, why not. Thumbs Up

I had a XTC 125, generally parts were ok, it's the bits that go wrong a lot that cause issues.

It is cheap though, I assume it's got t&t?

Thanks for the comments guys, I think it's worth a punt, not looking to make money, just a runaround and I've got other bikes. Mikuni carbs, Suzuki engine, everything visible is branded, shocks all look OK, no leaks or pits, front calliper paint is gone (but it's Brembo), disks are fine, bearings don't appear worn.

I have rider insurance up to 900cc so no worries there. We don't have tax or MOT - so any second-hand bike is a potential minefield.

Cheers! Smile

Just to make sure as insurance companies have changed their wording (or made it clearer Confused ).

They once said I was insured on any bike. They now say (when pushed) I'm insured on another bike as long as that bike is insured.

Meant taking out one of those day insurance things to take friends bike for MOT and get taxed.

Just a thought, wouldn't want anyone to be caught out.

Thumbs Up

Looks nice, should be fun with that engine. At that price I'd be biting their arm off!

I got the bike for £450. It's a 2002 rather than a 2000 model.

Stripping down and cleaning everything and surprised at how little corrosion, wear or damage is present and how substantial the frame, fixings and parts are.

'Fueling problem' was the extremely common (on the Suzuki DR650 apparently) fuel tap vacuum failure. £20 part from a Yamaha Raptor is the fix (ordered).

Got an intermittant neutral light and rev counter, but there's definate corrosion in the fuse box and as that's a £5.99 part I'm changing that and then will have to get the multimeter out if that's not the cure.

So far I'm having fun!

Edited to add - keep finding parts I recognise as Suzuki!

I had an XTC 125 last year and that had a Suzuki engine in it, so I had no problems with spares in that department.
Brakes are Grimeca, so pads and seals were never an issue.

Steal-Bay came up with loads of spares for allsorts of Sachs bikes.
Three Cross Motocycles in Dorset were helpful Thumbs Up .

So all in all I had no prolems whatsoever running a Sach Smile

Looks nice, kind of thing I like in fact it reminds me a lot of my MZ when I bought it kept finding more and more parts on it were Yamaha think only the frame and maybe the wiring loom is MZ original.

Removed several litres of mud, dust, oil and grease and the rear carrier, beginning to look OK!

Thanks for the comments & info people. Smile
