Why doesn't F1 go to Mugello? I think it would be a really good track for proper racing

Well the layout is nice but the run off areas are too small and the infrastructure at the circuit couldn't cope with the whole F1 circus.

Why use it for the pre season testing then?

A lot to do with its Ferrari's home test track.... I'm sure the other teams would have something to say given that they have a lot more data on track.

The other question is could Mugello even afford to host an F1 event?

Barriers are too close on some places, Track is narrow by F1 standards, lap is quite short, facilities aren't up the F1 standards, Italy already has an F1 race at Monza, another F1 standard track at Imola. Why set a race in Mugello instead of London? or one of the many other places willing to build a track specifically for F1?

London will be a parade. Mugello is a real race track

I believe you'll find Ferrari mostly test at Fiorano, near Maranello, the track they designed and built, specifically for the purpose.

As for why F1 only tests at Mugello, as Nexus pointed out, it probably couldn't handle the full onslaught of a GP and all that it entails, plus they have to keep some circuits spare, as they aren't allowed to test on tracks that feature in the current F1 calendar.

Actually they do test on tracks that are on the calendar, the obvious one being Catalunya. Silverstones just had a young driver test too, and there'll be another young driver test at Abu Dhabi later on in the season.

Basically, Mugello doesn't have the top FIA track license which is needed for F1 cars to race there. I forget how many licenses there are, but they determine what series you can host, so some tracks can only host up to GT1 races or whatever. Not sure on the exact specifics of it.

Shame really as all the drivers seemed to like it on the test as well. Whoever said runoff is wrong. Monaco? Valencia? Laughing

Low-speed?

Mugello is a very fast circuit, with high-speed corners. The higher the cornering speed, the larger the run off required for an FIA licence.

Racing and testing are very different. You're unlikely to get punted off the outside of a bend in a test...

...unless you come across Maldonado.

Monaco is utterly anachronistic as I'm sure you know. It would never be granted an F1 licence today and only remains on the calendar because of its heritage.

Barcelona?

I must admit, even as I was typing I was wondering about Spain, but I'm sure at one point there was ban on testing at current tracks.

Maybe it's been relaxed, or I just imagined it.

What about the barcelona testing? Or is that only in-season testing that it applies to?

That was a freak, he could've had that accident another hundred times and it wouldn't have had the same outcome.
