As title. Anything that tends to go regularly in these bikes that I should be aware of?

Also any idea what the hell this filler cap is all about?

Nothing really to look out for, they're basically indestructible. I sold one on with 70k miles, and one with 60k miles so unless anything's obviously out of the ordinary I shouldn't be too concerned.

That filler's of an old model one, but works the same as standard one's.

Cheers, i'll just take a good look around then Thumbs Up

Any particular reason they would have replaced the tank besides crash damage though? It's an '02 model so surely it should have a newer cap?

Take a voltmeter and check the voltage at 5k RPM. If it's 15+ volts then a new reg/rec is needed so ask for £80~£100 off the price.
(They tend to eat regulators)

Yeah mine's an '02 model and the filler is completely different - that looks like a very early one, so more than like had a replacement tank.

Whats wrong with the filler cap? Missing carbon fibre, wi-fi access and a fuel guage app? Mines the same as well as nearly every other motorcycle since the 70's.

I'd be more inclined to believe its a (very) late registered A4 model seeing as the tank, seat and possibly the side plastics are different between the A and C models.

It has a fuel gauge though, early ones didn't did they?

Rolling Eyes
We're wondering why an '02 ER5 has the wrong filler cap. The pictured one is from an early ER5.

Turns out it is an ER-5 "Twister".

As far as I can tell the only difference between the "Twister" and a regular ER-5 is the fuel cap. Laughing

It's priced at £1300 and I'm not going to pay a penny over £1100, preferably £1k. So trying to knock off more might be pushing it Very Happy

Google Image Search doesn't return a single ER5 Twister that has a black radiator surround. They're all silver.

My 1996 ER5 had the "tobacco tin" filler cap but no fuel gauge. Could be that Kawasaki had a bunch of old tanks kicking around and needed to use them. Could be that someone has replaced the tank on this specific one.

Edit - could be an interesting bodge actually. A bike with no gauge will have had a reserve tap so 2 outlets from the tank. A bike with a gauge may not have had a reserve so just the one outlet. Some geezer switching tank (a) to bike (b) may have inolved the use of sealant, blue-tak or worse.

Mine is a 98 model with fag tin filler cap and fuel gauge, for what it's worth.

Check the usual things, also try and bag a test ride on it and check the rear brake. If it's pulsing there's a fair chance the drum has ovalled from brake shoes being worn down. Check the "usable range" gadget on the brake drum, too. It's not happened to mine, but I've known of it happening to quite a few people who have owned them.

Cheers,
Steve.

Is it just me that thinks £1000 for a 2002 er5 is too expensive?

Maybe. There looks to have been later models sold for less on Ebay, but it all depends on how many dents you want on your tank or how much rust you want on your swing arm Smile

I got my 53 model for a few quid under £700 (or it might have been 8...i forget) with 25k miles on and in need of a good service.
Mine also has a fuel gauge, regular circular cap and a reserve tank Cool
The value depends on the mileage and general condition.
if it's got decent mileage and is in fairly good condition then it could be worth £1000, but it would have to be very tidy for its age to be worth that IMO

Apart from the rectifier which has been mentioned.

My rear wheel had drum brakes and this went oval.

This meant I had to buy a new rear wheel.

Rectifiers are well known issues, theres a guy on the er5 forum that sells uprated units for about £130.

Ovaled drum's, yes they all do that eventually too. Use less rear brake or convert to a disc somehow.

From a dealership so that might explain the price difference.

Has guage and tap, but all seems factory (nothing obviously out of the ordinary or liberal use of duck tape).

Bought it in the end, spotless, 20k miles, SS downpipes, Viper exhaust (fucking deafening, even with the baffles Neutral ) braided hoses, nice aftermarket screen, 3 month warranty, 12 months Tax and a service, and a full tank.

Saleswoman was fit, and they have a pool table, offered me a brew and a game of pool if i'm ever in the area again Very Happy .

Goodstuff.

Enjoy your ER, I had one for 3 years and I absolutely loved it.

I did about 20K on it and to this day I still regret selling it.

Everything is just soo cheap for it and and the mpg was the best I have ever had. I would regularly get over 70mpg.

Mine was also restricted for the first 2 years and it really took the restriction well. In fact it was a perfect bike.
