Been on Ebay the last couple of weeks looking for my next bike I was after a FJ1200 but bought a RF900 last night.

A while back I wrote down the bikes I had owned over the last thirty years (51), admittedly some for only a few days and sometimes I had 2-3 at the same time.

If I had just kept them I would be loaded now , after seeing the prices for bikes that changed hands for pennies not so long ago.

Just the highlights

GPZ750 Turbo - Then £1250 now £5000

AP50 x2 - Then £25 now £1500

FSIE - as above

250/350LC x 3 - Bought my last one for £100 now £2-3000

RD250DX - Then £200 now £2000

The best part of £20,000 just for those few , anyone else on here had the same experience.

Not exactly - I've not sold one of my vehicles that I think of as potentially depreciation free though.

Question is though, when is the 'then' you were talking about? How would inflation have affected those prices.

And, of course, how much would it cost you to either keep them running or restore them for sale?

Take the example of an RD250Umm... £200 in the late seventies was a lot of money, in the same way that £2000 is now...

You'd be better off if you had put it all in the stock market or in a high interest account to be honest...

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

1986 I think and £200 was a couple of weeks wages back then so affordable for a teen, its not so much how much but more why, take that RD ,couple of grand, but take a Z250 of the same age, I would of payed about the same for one in the mid eighties, now £500 and not really sort after, weird how some bikes get sort after and others don't, who would have thought that X7s would cost what they do now as they were always a poor mans Elsie.

But selling bike A would have funded your next motorcycle, bike B. Seriously don't kid yourself, you're not in the position financially to invest in a batch of motorcycles.

This, all my mates can't comprehend why I let my CBR 400 go saying even if didn't ride it I should hold onto it as it will only appreciate in value (what with new licenses in addition to being fairly uncommon) but I needed money now and a relaibe cheap bike to commute on, may be kicking myself in a few years who knows but at least I have transport I can afford and a means of commuting etc.
