What's the situation with front vs back?

On my old rear tyre, it was already worn straight to the edge. I have just got a part worn and it had about 10mm of chicken strip showing. Now it has about 1 maybe 2mm. But, the front has a good 10-15mm.

Clearly I can't lean over much further as the bike will run out of tyre. A friend's is like this as well.

So what's the deal?

I hear people saying they can wear out the rear, but say it's impossible to wear the front to the edge.
And vice versa.

It entirely depends on bike setup.

My R1 is raised 10mm at the rear on the WP rear shock.
And lowered about 12mm at the front, on Ktec forks.

My front tyre looks like this:

And my rear is a little less blistered, but worn just as far to the edge.
The bobbles of rubber around the edges isnt my god-like riding skills!
It's just rubber picked up off the track.
Rear doesnt have it any more though, as I can get it over far enough to wear the rear to the edge on the road. But I try not to push the front to the edge when road riding. Dont fancy smashing up another bike.

Mostly road riding, and one track day taster session on that tyre.

Ah see, I'm running it at standard height. Keep thinking about raising my bike at the rear as I'm quite tall and scraped the stand the other day with someone on the back Embarassed Laughing

Depends on the profile of the tyre too. The race scrubs I buy always tend to have a little bit of unused rubber on the front and obviously none on the rear.

Fronts tend to be a lot steeper so you often won't reach the edge.

My trx850 would go off the edge of the front when it had a 120/60 profile on. Not overly keen as there's no 'safety margin'.

Same with the zx7, i slapped a 180/55 on the rear ( std is 190/55) because it was free. Runs way off the edge to the point where the bike becomes unstable. Again, dislike. Front is fine though, about 5-10mm showing.

You can wear the front near to the edge by loading it more. Basically trail braking into corners harder.

On the road my rear's worn to the edge, but the front isn't. To me pushing the front that hard on the road isn't really a great idea.

Yeah I do get a bit worried about pushing with the front. Not too bothered to be honest, was just wondering why.

And I have 70 profile front and rear.

Totally agree.
Hence the reason the bobbles are stil on my front tyre, and not the rear.
On the road, I cant load the front enough to wear to the edge, and wear off the bobbles like I can with the rear.

Still think it depends on the profile to a large extent. If your pegs are scraping and you're still not reaching the edge of the tyre then it's always going to have chicken strips.
