I was doing a bit of mod1 practice today with a friend of my daughter.
She has a 1983 Suzuki GS125S which smells (and looks) like it's burning a bit of oil (it smokes more than my 2T when it's warmed up!). The tickover is also quite erratic, in that it will sometimes tickover at 4K and sometimes it just won't tick over at all.
It also takes a bit of starting when warm.

My first thought was rings for the cause of the smoking but is there anything that would cause that as well as the poor tickover & starting issues?
She's had the carb off and cleaned it but it didn't make any difference.

The poor tickover and starting is likely to be caused by the oil fouling the spark plug or poor compression (Piston rings)

Have you taken the plug out out and had a look at it after the bike has been ticking over for a while?

4 stroke oil isn't designed to be burnt, and will tend to leave deposits if that is the cause..

The burning oil could be caused by the rings or the valve stem oil seals.
