We have just acquired a 1981 Honda Goldwing.

The last time she was taxed was 1987 - so has been off the road for a good 20 years. Her right hand side head has been removed previously due to a suspect head gasket failure - however we cannot see any evidence of this ourselves.

The good things are that all the parts are there as far as we can see, and that the engine still turns over by hand and builds compression.

It was free - it was my partners Dads who sadly passed away in January.

Thanks!

We are considering giving it a fresh coat of paint - thinking along the lines of white with red stripes where the gold ones currently are.

Top bikes, I have a soft spot for those, especially the naked ones. Must admit i'm not too keen on the fully dressed ones.

Keep the servicing up when it's back on the road and you can expect it to eat a hundred thousand miles with ease.

Super cool retro styling Thumbs Up

Got some details from the previous owner.

Turns out it did start life with a fairing but after being shipped to the US (I assume for some kind of riding holiday) it was dropped and sent back. The fairing was removed and it was put back on the road, no serious damage.
Soon after the headgasket blew, twice. It turned out that the cooling fan wasn't cutting in causing it to over heat. Probably an electrical problem caused when the fairings were removed.
And thats how it was left!

So, the first thing I'm going to do is get both heads checked and skimmed if needed. Then test/replace the electrics and put it back together! Only real expence is going to be the exhaust as the one that was on it was to far gone.

Another vote here for the old 'naked' look 'wing. IMO looks far better than the lardy tourer it turned into in later life.

Based on the 'wing engine the Valkyre cruiser wasn't too bad.

Have fun putting it back on the road Thumbs Up

It's crazy how good looking those bikes are that I posted, I can't stop looking at them! Who'd have thought that a 'wing' could be so insanely beautiful!

It really has given us some major inspiration, didn't even think to shorten the tail!

We're on the look out now for some wire wheels! They look SO much better than the Com Stars that are on it already.

It's going to be a nice change from doing the mini! Laughing

I'm loving the tanned leather seat on the first one - works very well with the brg and gold theme.

Does anyone have any colour suggestions? We had the idea of White/Red - due to them being Honda colours, however we now think that the white would be too light and it would be best to stick with darker colours?

I hate Goldwings with a passion.

Is what I thought before reading this thread, have never seen the old ones before, they look great, the modded ones look amazing and the stock ones have so much potential Thumbs Up

Looking forward to this build, looks like fun.

We couldn't resist taking it apart in between waiting for things to do - and it'll come apart even further over the week whilst we are doing the shultz on my mini.

Here are todays pictures! Smile

Did a bit more today stripping wise, but got stuck when we wanted to take the swing arm off due to not having the right size allen key.

They have such beautiful frames, I can't understand what possessed Honda to cover them up!

It looks surprisingly clean for a bike thats been sat for a long time.

And I do like the naked look, almost muscle bike style.

It makes you wonder why they put the masshosive fairings on as it has some tasty lines as a naked bike.

It was stored in a garage for most of that time, however all the fluids had leaked everywhere, so it's covered in crystallised brake fluid etc.

Carb rebuild kit for it is around £100 Crying or Very sad Laughing Needs to be done though!
