Email just received:

"Dear Miss Yates,

The Government announced in its Budget on 21st March 2012 that VAT would be added to self storage sales with effect from 1st October 2012. This will apply to all storage services at self storage, removals and container companies in the UK.

For more information please see the full letter attached.

Yours sincerely

Adrian Lee
Operations Director"

So now the stuff we have in storage will be costing us 20% extra, on an already pretty expensive outgoing. Thank you Conservative/Lib Dem Coalition. Thank you very much. We put our stuff in storage because we couldn't afford to live in a house because your stupid government fucked up the job market. So now we're living with my parents. Luckily I have parents who were able to do this otherwise we'd be homeless. Rub salt into the wounds why don't you. Can we store our stuff at Number 10? I'm sure you have plenty of space... c'mon, big society and all that, do your bit, chip in...

I do hope you have put this into a letter to #10 or it will be a pointless moan.

It is unlikely to do anything but maybe one micron of guilt (however unlikely) is better than nothing

Oh yes, for sure, I'm not for a minute a believer that any other party would be ANY different.

Would it cost you that much to eBay / Gumtree / Freecycle it? Flog, rebuy, you're already pissing money away on the storage.

(Like that argument worked on Mrs Borg last time we flitted... Rolling Eyes)

If you want to get political:

Arrow The Tories are taxing it because they need the money to buy some new PPP contracts from their cousins.
Arrow nuLabour would tax it because you're a bourgeois capitalist hoarding goods that should be redistributed to the proletariat.
Arrow The LibDems would tax it because hatstand gibber polecat.

It's stuff we'll need when we do move out my parents though, which should be in the next couple of months anyway so shouldn't see much of that 20% tax malarkey...for this time anyway. It's stuff like our bed, washing machine, fridge, sheesha pipe, ornamental candle lantern, scatter cushions - you know, the really necessary stuff that you need. Selling and buying it all again in a couple of months would be madness, MADNESS I tell thee!

Actually it's Labour responsible for most of the PPP debt! They're the ones who wanted to build brand new everything, but instead of paying for it out of the budget, they decided to impose the cost on future governments too via a PPP.

I did say new PPP contracts, once you're on the never-never-go-round, you might as well enjoy the ride.

Sell all bulky stuff, buy a small shed to store the remainder for less than a months worth of storage cost.

Or, throw the lot out, save the ~£100 a month and buy what you need with the saved cash.

Have you seen the price of sheds these days?! Lol! The bulky stuff (fridge, washing machine, bed) is the stuff that we need, which happens to also be the most expensive stuff we own - certainly not puchasable with the money we would save from not having it in storage. Not unless we have it in storage for like over another year!

All I want is Cameron's loft, not asking much, jeeze... Razz
