Book tokens

Got around £35 to spend on book tokens and going on holiday next week and it's pretty much the only time I read. Any recommendations for good novels. Don't really have much of a clue on literature. I have always enjoyed John Steinbeck novels. Apart from that I have no idea

I have just read the Dales series by Gervase Phinn. A good fun read, there are 5 or six in the series. Basics of them are he is a school inspector in Yorkshire. Think of the James Herriot type tales and you wont go far wrong. Funny through out to the point of tears running down your face.

If you fancy a bit of fantasy books give Joe Abercrombie a go. His books are full of blood and violence with serious lashings of black humour. Read excerpts of his first book. The blade itself.

Creepers by David Morrell (based around a group of Urban Explorers...)

The Soul Collector by Paul Johnson (crime thriller)

Siddhartha by Herman Hesse (Spiritual style story / a thinker)

I always loved anything by Jrr Tolkien, especially the hobbit. Definetely something everyone should read.

The Hunger Games is good as well. Much better than the film.

What i heared about the game of thrones is that the guy is never going to finish them in time. I wouldnt be supprised if the quality of them drops as the series goes on.

+1 for the hobbit. It's like LOTR only it doesn't go on forever. I listened to it on audiobook and it was probably the best audiobook i've ever heard.

Neil Gaiman is also good, American gods, anansi stories, graveyard book.

If you want something classic then The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger. Or Orwell's 1984 makes for interesting reading (just how much the guy got right).

If you want something more contemporary then Michael Marshall Smith writes some awesome pseudo-sci-fi (sci-fi in the "I can invent what I want" sense not the "Star Trek" sense). Only Forward is a brilliant novel.
