Howdy

anybody know about voice operated intercoms?

Ive actually already got a couple of cobra MT975 intercoms which are reasonably good. fine for what i need. They come with a push to talk button which straps to the handle bar - which i HATE! the cable either interferes with the indicator, or it takes up too much room on the grip, or you position it in the middle of the bar and it slides and rotates all over the place. I really want to get a voice operated headset for these radios.

been looking at throat mics as an option - anybody got any experiences of these? seems the US special forces one is compatible:

anybody tried anything similar?

just after advice really!

cheers!

Arrow Bike 2 Bike Communication.... where to start

Personally, I found VOX to be a pain in the lug-ole most of the time.

PTT is the reliable way to go.... but similar probs as described with PTT switch mounting & big hands.

I made my own......

Also proto-typed a permanent mount one to go on the DT, with a little bracket that bolted under the left hand switch cluster, into which I was going to incorporate a pair of connector sockets to go A - Helmet B - Radio; to save spaghetti... follow on plot was to make bracket to mount radio next to fork, so I could run it off battery eliminator with even less spagetti.... but bike got nicked before I could finish it.....

Have a play..... wiring is explained in link.

Autocom PTT was a ball-ache, it was extremely unreliable and lacked feedback on whether you'd pressed the button hard enough or not.

Vox worked far better for me.

VOX monitors mic noise levels. Two main problems, 'lag' and 'threshold'.

Lag: you say "Testing, Testing One-Two-Three" and it doesn't 'trip' until after the second testing, so all that gets transmitted is "One-Two-Three"

Threshold: level that it decides to 'trip' the transmit circuit. You can sometimes set the threshold level, but even then.... set it on the drive so you talk, and mic transmits.... get on teh road, mic pics up wind roar, and continiousely transmits. Set it 'low' you have to shout to make it transmit, and every time you 'pause' or hesitate in your speach... cuts out...... particularly on sibilance, like 'esses'....

Add lag to threshold drop-out, and you say... "Testing, Testing One-Two-Three" cuts in on the "Tes".. and out on the "ting" and between gaps, so what gets transmitted is "Tes", "es" "One" "oo" "ee" kind of thing!

All depends on levels and noise and situation, but CAN make the radio utterly frustrating!.... Riding with a buddy.... asking something like "Which way shall we go at the end" you have had five minutes of "What?" "Sorry" and "I SAID!" garbled, you end up stopping and talking face to face!

Problem with a throat mic is that it will be outside your helmet so may not work as well.

Vox for me.

Even my old 2002 autocom system worked fine over 140mph on tour with no wind noise. Speech wasn't missed either, so it must have kicked in much less than a second.

VOX does need a little setting up, but once you have it right, give a cough then talk. Easy/
