Who does it then, and is it best to wear just one to hear for various traffic EG sirens?

Im going for a decent ride out tomorrow (weather permitting) but i wanna use the ipod to entertain me, the engine doesnt have much to keep "happy" to Mr. Green

Cheers

I ride with earphones in all the time. I prefer it to nothing. People say you should be able to hear what's going on around me but if something was going to slam into me from behind I wouldn't hear it anyhow with wind noise etc.

Just check mirrors more than normal really. Nothing like listening to your tunes on your way to work.

As do I - tend to have it at a volume where I can hear whats going on around me (wind noise cuts through anything anyway) - as said, just check your mirrors and keep your obs up.

as above i always ride with headphone's in, not the crappy bud type, i like wearing the in ear headphone's purely because they are certain to stay in your ear's through out the ride Thumbs Up

as above again, if someone is going to hit you up the ass, they will you can do very little to avoid it happening Thumbs Down

I was wondering about this. Ive not been riding long and decided to leave it a while to build confidence with no interruptions.
The theory test is always banging on about wearing ear plugs anyway!

I tried that, but soon got bored of it.

Hearing the wind whistling around your head isn't exactly conducive to concentration anyway - and as long as you can concentrate 'through' the music you'll be fine.

Do whatever you want to do though - it can be intimidating out there for a little while at first Laughing

I used to wear them, somehow managed to hear it above wind-noise at 80mph but still could hear everything else around me at a stop (well, other engine noises). Certainly never had a problem hearing sirens with them in.

Never had a problem with music while I'm riding. Noise cancelling headphones are awesome. I see a lot of emergency services don't use their siren too much up this way, just the lights and if you're as perceptive as you need to be when riding, you'll see 'em coming.

One thing I did notice was that when I didn't use the headphones I was paranoid about the noises my engine made.

I can't listen to music while riding. Which is quite annoying because I end up riding like a tard on motorways to fight the boredom.

But when I do listen to music, I feel very disconnected from the bike which has resulted in me nearly getting into 2 accidents and actually having an accident. Earphones in, sat nav talking to me fine, but not music.

I've put some flat speakers in mine, wired to a female 3.5mm socket. Male to male lead goes between ipod and helmet.

There's no bass to speak off but the sound level is absolutely fine to hear both the the music and every other sound around me. I use it for any journey over a mile.

I used just one ear when I'm using the satnav on my smartphone and that works quite well...has to be on full volume though due to wind noise.

I have the noise isolating type and wear one in my left ear and a EARsoft 39db ear plug in the other, no issues at all with hearing sirens etc.

Have done trips of hundreds of miles like that, couldn't even start to face the boredom of doing that with just the noise of the bike and the wind!

I just use regular earphones. Pop them in and put my lid on. The helmet usually keeps them in place and quietens things down enough for me to hear the music without having to crank it up. Even at higher speeds.

No problems hearing engine or sirens either. Job's a good 'un. Thumbs Up

I'm the exact same. Every clunk and click of the engine makes me think there's something wrong with it. Music definitely helps.

YAY to this...

I don't see how its any different to wearing ear plugs!
(apart from having some Take That and Boyzone blaring out @ full volume!!! Laughing )

Seriously, I've wandered this, I have a few times and gotta say I've felt more comfortable riding and listening to tunes than just the engine, after the last disastrous bike I had, I agree with bubbs - every little noise makes me panic that theres something wrong.

Until I get used to the 'feel' of the bike though, music wont be an everyday thing.

I'd be hard pressed to ride without entertainment, regardless of how many cagers spew to me how it's 'illegal' and yet when I ask them to cite the law that I'd apparently been breaking, and comment on how CBT and tests are obviously illegal, and I'm the douche? lol

Plus, satnav on the phone is a decent bonus Smile

I tried it with an Iphone 4s but as soon as I picked up speed, the volume went really high to the point I thought my ear drums were going to burst.

Does the 4S detect speed/wind noise and adjust the volume accordingly? I did the return journey with my Samsung GS3 with the same earphones and it was fine Confused
