I have just collected a new project bike and it is at my parents house.

My house is only about 600 yards away, and I was wondering if I was likely to get nicked for no insurance etc if I was to push the bike from their house to my house along the footpaths.

It will basically be a rolling chassis, with just a frame, fork handlebars, wheels etc but no engine lights numberplates etc...

If I am likely to get done I will somehow shoehorn it into the car,

The bike doesn't have an engine. How is it going to pass an MOT?

Thanks guys.

The way I see it is that it isn't a motor vehicle if it doesn't have an engine or other method of self-propulsion.

Also to have an MOT it would need to be complete, but I cannot complete it until I get it home.

I think it will depend on how "arsey" the plod is who comes across you and how you speak to him?

I pushed an off road bike (Bultaco 250) from one garage to the new garage half a mile away.
The pipe was way to loud for me to ride it (+ no tax, MOT, ect), so I did the right thing and pushed it.
Plod pulled up and immediately assumed that I had stolen the bike Evil or Very Mad .
I explained what I was doing and why in as a polite manner as I possibly could.
However being an "arsey" sort of plod he told me he was going to report me Mad ie unfit vehicle, no tax, no insurance, no helmet, and so on.
Luckily for me I got a letter from the plod saying that it was not in the public purses interest to persue a prosecution.

On the flip side a mate of mine has two lock up garages near each other and a couple of times has been stopped.
Both times they (the plod) have just asked him what he was doing, he gave them a reasonable explanation and they went on thier way.

Well, he'll have to load it on a LEGAL van then.

Oh ... Use a ramp, health and safety is paramount.

Not 100% sure now, but from memory an engine wasn't required for an MOT Laughing

It is now. All motor vehicles need to be fit for purpose in order to pass an MOT.

you will be fine i myself picked up my new project bike the other week, with NO MOT, NO TAX , NO INSURANCE, rid it to BP petrol station to get some juice then rode 2 mile's home Wink

also to add it had a broken number plate...

don't know if it's still possible but what i have heard is if you don't have the driven wheel on the ground you won't get caught so if your feeling strong lift the back wheel and walk it home with a friend ! Thumbs Up

Surely without an engine, lights, number plate etc., it's just a bicycle!

I would just do it, in fact I would just do it if it was a whole bike and hope any cops that see me are sympathetic - a lot depends on attitude. With so much missing from it (engine, seat etc) you'd have a good case to argue it was not even a vehicle.

This!! So much of this..

Really, what planet do some of you live on?
I know some seem to have taken the piss, but some seem
to be giving genuine advice.

I'm sure all of us have at some point rode some sort of bike
'illegally' be that a new bike you've picked up, or having a quick
go around the block on a mate's bike.

I hardly think a few yards pushing half a bike down a path is going
to grab plods attention.

Even if you were caught, nothing will happen.

Gosh even I wouldn't think twice about just pushing that. With no engine its clearly just a project. If you're really concerned, leave as much off as possible, especially the seat. There's no way they'll stop you if its got no engine or seat. Maybe even wear a boilersuit.
Of course this assumes you haven't already got a local reputation.
And as ever, the rule if you are stopped is to be very patient & polite. A surprising number of police own bikes and they may just be interested as a fellow biker. If you get all defensive & uppity then they may respond in kind.

Even if the police were to try to charge you, a half decent solicitor would get it thrown out of court.

just do it,

without an engine the bike doesnt really pose any large threat to the general public, is unlikely to cause damage to the footpath unless you drop it awkwardly, and shows your not going to be riding it illegally until you have it up and running.

For the amount of paperwork involved in arresting someone its not worth the hastle.

plod gives you a fine? take it to court, watch the judge wet him/herself laughing "you fined this person for pushing a bike with no engine on the footpath? LULZ GTFO"

honestly its just not worth thier time and / or effort to do you for it.

also, its 600 yards, could walk that in less time than it takes to roll and smoke a ciggy haha

HOWEVER: they could stop you and ask where you got it and where your going with it and why. but this would be more down to them checking to see if you've nicked it or not.

Thanks for the help guys.

There was a reasonable chance I would get stopped, as there is CCTV all over the place, and I would have thought that they could get a car down in the 20 mins or so it would take me to push.

I have found a way around it now anyway. I have taken the bike to bits and it fitted in the car.
