Alrighty, head gasket replacement done, car works (Ford Telstar TX5 Ghia 1993, 2.0 I4 DOHC Fuel injection. Same as Mazda 626). The problem now is that it is running rough. The timing is all correct. The basic problems/symptoms:
- hesitation when revving, along with faint, dark smoke.
- subtle engine vibrations every second or so (accompanied by a little decrease in rpm, but goes up again)
- low 'putt putt' sound from exhaust every second or so, also accompanied by the decrease in rpm. i think it happens in conjunction with the vibrations.
- it cant idle by itself, it dies, except after a good 5 minute warm up.
- hard to start.
- spark plugs are extremely black.

Some more info: There are 2 sensor thingos that are attached to a metal coolant thing which attaches to the head (the metal thing has thick rubber tubes, etc). The sensor things snapped, but i glued it back together so the metal connections line up. I'm guessing the sensor things are connected to a big computer which dictates the fuel injection. If i didn't glue it right (im guessing i didn't. ill get new ones anyway), could that be where the problem lies? After a bit of thought, the sensors probably aren't working which is telling the computer that the engine is cold, and putting the injectors in some sort of choke mode?

Also, there is an audible, though not loud, hissing or sizzling sound after the engine has been running. I'm not too worried about it ATM, but could it mean i didn't do something right?

Cheers Smile

Sounds like it is running extremely rich. First guess would be to check all sensors (lambda, map ect) are fitted right then check them all with a multimeter against the manual

I think you're right. I will try checking those sensors, ill get myself a multimeter also. So they can all really have a big impact on how the engine runs, can't they?

Is a soldering iron too much to ask? Seriously - it doesn't matter if half the plastic crap surrounding the sensor is hanging off, just make sure that you've got electrical continuity before you do anything more; otherwise you're just going to keep fouling plugs, and attracting the ire of BCF's mechanical types.

I'd be thinking coolant leak. Has there been any discernible change in the coolant level since starting it back up?

I lost my soldering iron Embarassed
But yeah it was kinda a last minute bodge, i was gonna replace them anyway. Or i could find my soldering iron and do it properly.

There was a small coolant leak, but it was coming from a different place to the noise. I'll figure it out Wink I put new coolant in it before I started if for the second time, I didn't take notice of the level.

The thing i'm most worried about ATM is getting the engine to run right. Do you think the sensors are most likely causing it to run this rich? (causing bad idling, hard starting, smoke etc).

now, can the coolant sensors really have that big of an effect on how the car runs?

BTW i tried running the car without air cleaner to see if it ran smoother, here are the results:
- better idling
- bit less 'putt putts'
- less smoke at idle, but still dark smoke when revving
- spark plug proved to be a tad not as black

next: take out sensors and do them properly, or replace them...

still any ideas anyone? cheers

Air filters, by their very nature, restrict air flow a little; remove filter + increase air flow = mixture leans off slighty, engine runs better.

BTW, if it's running that rich that it barely ticks over, all that unburnt fuel will be doing a great job of washing the oil off the bores, so you don't want to be doing that for long.

Thankyou both ever so much with your responses. Shaft i was worried about that also, so i'm trying to lessen how much i start it so i can get it running properly. CHR15- your knowledge amazes me Thumbs Up . All makes sense now. I was going to replace those sensors but never got around to it because i was busy doing other things with the car.

So those coolant sensors are obviously the temp sensors you are speaking of, CHR15? Would you briefly explain how touching the wires work to get it running better?
Also, there are two of those sensors, they look basically the same but are different colour, they are located next to eachother. They both happened to break, would i do the wire trick with both?

Cheers Smile

Forgot to say, touching the wires together will give continuity with very low resistance, the same as if the engines hot

You are my favourite turbo nutter bastard who lived.
+ 100 for you
There is literally no way (that i know) to differentiate between the two sensor thingos. I have had a thorough look online, still cant tell the difference. Here is an image of the mazda version of the car: https://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn244/djdevon3/Stuff/CoolantTempSensor.jpg
There is only one of the sensors, which makes me even more confused, cause mine has 2...
I'll take a look at ford spares and see if i can just get a cheap temporary replacement for both sensors, or even two in case one of them dont work (4 altogether).
Thanks for all your help Thumbs Up

The sensors will have codes on them.

Find a manual for your car and see what it says.

Brilliant. Very Happy
