so, price aside,

what do you guys prefure to go for when buying a bike?

personally i can see the benefits like warranty, no damage ect ect but the idea of having to break in the engine puts me off buying new,

i'd rather buy a bike with a few thousand miles thats been well looked after, has complete mechanical history and proven itself.

what bout you guys? (and girls)

Can't afford a new one & probably never will, would probably opt for used anyway from a depreciation point of view.

this whole thread is fail when u said price aside. Price is one of the most important aspects and the decider for most, value for money!! If price is not relevant then u would go new every time surely?!

Nearly always used, Mostly due to cost (be fucking annoyed if I had just bought a showroom fresh bike to drop/crash it).

Nothing wrong with breaking in an engine, I'm always having new work vans, Just drive them like normal.

I think everyone would like a new bike, but not everyone can afford one. I think thats the main reason everyone gets used.

Price aside then of course I'd buy new every time. In reality though price and affordability is the deciding factor when making the decision on new v's used.

I currently have a 18 month old bike I bought new and a 14 year old bike which I bought second hand well fifth hand actually!

But if you can afford it picking up a perfiect new bike is nice, with 2 years warranty but you've got to to be abl to afford taking the loss which some people can 10 - 15k is a piss in a pond to some people.

I've seen people book in a bike for service and then buy a new one because they prefer the colour.

+1 Thumbs Up

"Price aside", I'd definately go for new every time, then just buy another one when the first one gets dirty?! Wink

Unfortunately I don't have an inexhaustible supply of money, so that's not an option. I've bought a couple of well-looked-after 2nd hand bikes so far, and been more than happy with them.

To be fair the only vehicle I ever bought from new was a car some years ago, but after a number of warrantee problems and watching all that depreciation fall away I never want to go down that route again

sometimes buying an older bike can cost more than a new one......

but i believe buying a second hand one is the better option

a 2009 r1 is worth £7,000, they were £14,000 new ? that's over £2,000 on depreciation alone each year.....

car's are worse

I only ride cheaper bikes (Z750 / ER6). For me I would only want a new bike, there's sometimes excellent finance deals at 0%, throw in the warranty add an extra 2 years to it and you have 4 years of no biking issues.

At the end of the 4 years, sell it for a couple of grand less than new and then start again

I think unless you get a REALLY good deal on a new bike, little miles, near perfect condition ones are the way to go, usually save a few grand. My Bandit for example, 2 years old, 5k miles and only a few scratches on grabrail from bungees, 2k cheaper than new. And I got £600 worth of free stuff. If you're paying finance though, you may be better to buy new, as they usually work out about the same as 0% is so common now

Personally, given my druthers I'd go for a new one if I could afford it. I couldn't give a flying fuck at a rolling doughnut about depreciation - if I buy a car or a bike, the economics are the smallest part of the decision.

It isn't an investment, it's going to be an extension of yourself. You will put your own marks on it, internally it will have that special 'thing' about it which means you could pick it out of 100 just like it.

Bit like taking on an older girlfriend - you know there have been other men in her life, but you don't really want to think about them.

I bought both, it depends on what I fancy and what is available. As others have said, I don't look at the financial aspects too deeply. I buy a bike to ride, I know it's going to depreciate, even more so if I chuck it down the road. Mr. Green

I tend to buy my main bike new and any others in the stable are 2nd hand, but I usually change them regularly and keep the main one 3 years or so.

Money no object I would have the new Duke Panigale.

I would prefer a used older bike though. Something about most of the new modern sports bikes. They just look way too small. And I'm a small person.... ok smallish....... Oh ok short and fat then!

Used, even without the money being a factor there's nothing new I like the look of. If value is unimportant then I'd chuck the cash at my xjr and make it Shiney an new with a few extra's...

Every second hand bike i have ever owned ran sweet as a nut..

You just need to have common sense when buying.

Sure, A new bike would be really nice, But.. I doubt I'll ever be able to afford one, Besides, Most bikes are getting uglier by the year.

Used ... cuz i'm friggin poor.

A brand new car or bike (or indeed bicycle that isn't paid for off insurance) would be quite the luxury. The brand-newestest thing that I own, other than a gaggle of external hard disks and some DVD movies, is a toss-up between my laptop (bought box-fresh from PC World) and my bike (bought 3 years ago), both minted in 2006. And both cost me very nearly the same amount, almost to the pound.

A new computer occasionally makes sense because they'll run for ages with very little looking after, you totally get your money's worth. They don't depreciate as badly.

New vehicles... I'm yet to be convinced. I have to do more repairs, but the insurance is cheaper and the overall cost per annum is still decidedly lower than buying new, doing no repairs at all (is that even possible? I've even seen 6 month old cars have things go wrong with them) and selling on after three years.

Whereas the CG, bought 2nd hand, is still somehow worth about as much as when I bought it, minus maybe £100. It's found it's base level already.

The car, it was £2400, but I got quite a lot for that, and it was probably 4-5x that new. The most it can lose, even if for some reason I can't even get scrap value for it, is 1/4 the new price ... after it's already lost 3/4 before I got to it. And I'll probably have it as long as a typical from-new owner.

I know the manufacturers can't continue to produce and the used market itself would die without people buying new vehicles, but I just don't have that kind of money, or such a huge whack of pride or insistence on specifying my transport's fitted options right down to every dotted T and crossed I. Embarassed
