Just back from my route des grande alps/gorges du verdon/route napolean tour, what a trip bike arrived at calais and just died i had to replace the battery, adjust the camchain and replace the fuse for the radiator fan! big thanks to a random french car garage that jumpstarted my battery and increased the idle speed so it wouldnt cut out and then give me directions to norauto where i replaced the battery and adjusted the cam chain.

I still cant belive how beautifull the route des grande alps was, its something every biker has to do! the roads are quite unbelievable, im just after driving my cbr 600 from reims to glasgow scotland in 13 hours all thanks to the airhawk seat cant beleive the difference that seat makes! putting pics on my facebook dont know if i can link the album or that?

I loved it when I did it last year. Was hard going in some places though, as I was trying to do the whole route in two days with pillion.

Think I averaged about 35mph on some of the twisty bits lol.

Now, where are your photos?

Two quick questions;

1) how long did Thonon-les-Bains to Le Grand-Bornand take?

This website seems to suggest ~24 hours riding to do the ~435 miles. Do you reckon that is accurate? Seems a bit OTT to me.

2) Do you think it is better ridden north-to-south, or south-to-north (i.e. if you could do it again, which way would you ride it)

Thanks!

I'd always do North to South as getting to the coast is a nice reward for the ride.

I did the full route.

I can't tell you how long it took exactly but I was travelling from Berne to Menton via Routes des grandes alpes and it took me a good two days with pillion.

I got to Evian (start) by lunch time, then Saint Martian by about 8pm where I camped.

thanks for the info c-m

I may have to re-evaluate my route. I had planned to do this route, also the b500 in black forest and also the stelvio pass.

Problem is I only have Tuesday - Sunday to get it done.

Might just give the stelvio a miss!
