Bust the seal on the right hand fork riding home, fork oil leaking everywhere. Was close to where I was so gently rode the bike back.

Anyway, upper seal looks to be okay, just shot up, lower seals look kind of broken.

I don't have the parts to do it myself and I'm supposed to be heading down south tomorrow, around 150 miles. Can't really do that unless I can get this fixed.

Is there anyone with the parts/time to help me get it done?

My location is near Hinckley, Leicestershire. Bike is a 2004 Suzuki GS500F with forks from an earlier version of the bike, some E model from the 90s I think.

Got to head home tonight, around another ~3 miles, will that be alright to ride on the busted seal?

EDIT: Just a thought. I still have the parts from my forks which got broken in the crash. I don't know how good/bad they are. Unsure as how to fit them though.

I rode on a blown seal for 9 months. Thumbs Up

If you have the seals with you, you are more than welcome to do it here, takes probably.. half hour.

Someone local might be able to do this for you ASAP though!

If you have the lower forks still... you might be able to strip the seals out of that just to "get you by" but they will need swapping before you head to Uni if they start showing signs of leaking.

Did the dust seal pop up the fork? You should have a dust sel which is over the outside then inside the fork there should be a metal retaining ring and then an oil seal. Might have some shit in the seal or have you hit a big hole in the road?

Oh, only real tools you need is either an old seal or a similar diameter bit of pipe, a light hammer and the socket/allen key to strip the forks.

Didn't quite realise the steepness of the speedbump I was going over for how fast I was going. Rolling Eyes

Dust seal came up the stancheon and the metal ring popped out but is resting on top of the lower part of the fork now. The inner seal looks gone to be honest.

I lost an awful lot of fork oil on the short ride back from where I did it.

Would say its blown loads of oil past it. Might not have popped the seal properly as they have a thick metal ring inside them.

Put the retaining ring back on and hit the seal back down carefully Thumbs Up

Fuck me, you want some fresh oil in that bad boy...

You have forced the inner seal out of its cubby hole. you shoudl be able to carefully tap that back in, refit the ring and put the dust seal on to stop the leak.

Fucking hell Laughing

Then when you arrive we can change that oil...as that my friend is rancid Laughing

You not got a local bike shop? they may have a set of seals in stock. You will need new oil as they look like water has been getting in. Even if you had the seals im sure someone who has done the GS before can talk you through it later tonight. Its an easy job but not if you have never did it before.

I went to do my fork seals, just a couple of hours I thought, due to some slight hic ups it is now day 7 and they are still in bits, admittedly I'm waiting for some parts that I hadn't planned on, but I.m still trying or rather the guy in the workshop is still trying to seperate the left hand fork.

Awesome, that's good news. Smile

I didn't quite realise how bad the oil was. Should probably have changed the fork oil when I bought the forks considering they were off an even older bike than my own.

I do have a local one, it's rather expensive though and doesn't really have a comprehensive inventory. There's a Suzuki dealer maybe 10-15 miles down the road in the city, imagine that'll be at OEM prices. I could probably get down there tomorrow to pick some seals up, if the ones I've got at home aren't good enough that is.

I struggled with that too! I never managed to actually get my crashed forks apart. I was going to, then I found some forks at a breakers instead. But it's that reason I don't really want to try it on my own because 7 days has me written all over it! Need someone to walk me through it for the penny to drop. Smile

I'll get that done before heading home tonight then and make sure I've got the seals to bring down with me. An hour's a bit optimistic though... you'll have me there... incompetent as can possibly be mechanically! Laughing

I could remove the GSXR forks and split them in that time, sure 1 GS fork will be fine Smile

It's the putting the forks back on which seems to be a nightmare on my bike. You'll see. Wink

Edit as to update without bumping

Used a screwdriver to gently pop the seals back to the right place and put the clip back on. Rode hope no troubles and the was no oil leaking from the seals and the seals didn't budge.

Bike felt terrible around corners, but I guess that's due to having forks with different levels of oil.
