Best way to pass my test?

Alright guys.. after some advice on how you did it / what you think is best.

My 125 is currently out of action, ringing around for some quotes now.

I've done the CBT and passed the theory, now ready for the harder bits!

I've seen on the training websites they want £75 for a MOD1 which includes test, bike hire and someone to take you there and back.

So I don't know whether to just do that while I don't have a bike.

But ideally I would like a couple of lessons.. I've had a mess around in car parks a little bit but would feel more confident doing a mock test.

They want £270 for a 'short' course Mod1. Thats mad.. can I not just do a couple of lessons?

What did you guys do?

Advice appreciated also for MOD2.. should I get my bike fixed and do it on that?

I'm trying to convince myself to spend out, because if I don't pass by Jan 2013 I believe that means 5 years on a 400 / 46bhp

And then extra costs for the next test.. so I'll be kicking myself.

What is up with your bike? - with a bit of help from here, you maybe able to repair on the cheap.

Leaves you to do your test on it then and still save money on that extortionate figure of £270.

Well for comparison Enfield School of Motorcycling did me an all in DAS course for £270, that included bike hire, six hours riding (and it was six hours actual riding) and a crack at Mod1/2 (bike hire included). Plus I did an extra Sunday morning jaunt with them before Mod2 for the princely sum of £25.

My god Andy that is good.

It seems all the schools round here are pretty steep.

And the test centre is'nt even in my area.. *WORRY* I don't know the place at all, let alone the roads / roundabouts ect.. Laughing

The first part of my exhaust that comes out of the engine block has just cracked:

Also the starter motor is a bit dodgy.

That pipe alone is £102

Don't worry about it. I've lived in Enfield for forty six years and fully expected to know all the roads on the test route...

... five minutes in I hadn't a clue where we were, I can't say it made any difference, the SatNav told me where to go, no worries.

Exhaust for a 2006 model, £15 at the moment

Exhaust, £50 BIN

Second hand starter motor

Removing the exhaust is easy, replacing the downpipe shouldn't take you long at all. Just remember to get a new gasket while you are at it. What will probably take you longer is threading the pipe round the frame, sometimes they just dont want to play!

Fix bike, do your mod 1 yourself having watched some videos on YouTube. Have a crack at mod 2, boom - licence.

bear in mind, you have to take ur test on the same style of bike ie: mod 1 on a 125, then you have to do mod 2 on a 125 also.

pretty sure it doesnt have to be the SAME bike, but the same category... / engine size etc...

have you considered a weld on the exhaust? could be a quick fix etc, but for cost of new, looking at £15,. be cheaper to replace yourself.

Tom ive just done all my tests, i did a days training for mod1 and a days training for mod2 all of it came to £440,
just do the training as it comes and then by each day you will know if your ready.
I did my days training by never even riding a geared bike before and then mod1 the day after, im sure you will piss it!

You'll need to fix the bike before selling it, it'll cost less than training, so just bite the bullet and do it now.

Mod 1 is £15.50, go for it. Mod 2, well, see how you feel, but you're far more likely to pay more for training than on resits.

+1 on this.

I did 3 Mod 1's before passing and then a single mod 2. I didn't have any lessons, apart from 2 CBT's (I'd let mine lapse Rolling Eyes ) and plenty of on-road experience. MUCH cheaper than doing the training.

It does help that I have a good head for details and kept asking loads of questions about the test and stuff when I was doing my 2nd CBT.

Practice yourself and then remember to be obsessive about the OBS on your tests. Even in the car park you need to remember your OBS.

I'm slightly concerned about availability of Mod 2's when I get there.

Whether the instructors where saying it on purpose I don't know but apparently there are long waiting lists. Thinking
I have also done 2 CBT's Embarassed

I did the first one just before I turned 17, as it was half price. I didn't get a bike till a year and a half later Laughing

I had to wait something like six weeks for my test. I reckon everyone's cacking themselves about the new test regime in Jan and getting their finger out & doing the tests a.s.a.p.

Heh, no problem dude Smile

The gasket is a soft copper ring that sits inside where you fit the downpipe coming out of the engine, it helps to seal everything in place when you tighten up the bolts holding the pipe to the engine block. You should be able to pick the old squashed one out when you pull the downpipe off, or you can leave it in place and pop the new one over it.

I will boogie over to your thread and have a peak when I find my laptop. xr's are dead easy to work on though so don't be put off by doing the work yourself Thumbs Up

Check the waiting time here : https://www.dft.gov.uk/fyn/practical.php
Although, some schools tend to book a block of tests so you can sometimes jump the queue by going with one...


Luckily the wait time round here is only 4 weeks.

If you can get there on short notice, you should be able to blag a cancellation slot. You just have to keep checking regularly, and I mean several times a day, they're not going to be available for long.

Have a look at test centres a bit further away? They may be worth the extra ride out there...or just keep checking for dates, you may be lucky and come across a cancellation.

Yes, it's just the school I had in mind where I might try and get a few lessons revolve around Uxbridge.

I think I'll look into Aylesbury training schools, a much nicer ride.

Still 7 week waiting list though!

Preferably aylesbury?

I did search but the last thread was 8 years ago!

I can't seem to find any, and the one that's there websites not working Thinking
