Very quick question- Will the downpipes on my 2001 hornet be stong enough to support a 16mm Almax/Pragmasis chain? If they are, how easily removed are the downpipes? I can't see anywhere else for it to go through and know that it is better to go through the bike than the wheel.

Or if anyone has an older hornet and fits a chunky chain through let me know!

And another thing... I take it the weight of the chain (in tailpack) doesnt make too much difference when riding... adds just over a stone, and im 13 stone already! I would probably use it every time i went to uni... so basically would carry it with me everywhere except ride-outs.

Ta! (and once I actually start riding I might be able to offer my experience in response to questions, instead of just asking all the time!)

Are you proposing to lock the chain round the exhaust?

That would be a silly idea, you could hacksaw through the exhaust in less than a minute.

I hook mine through the wheel, around the swing arm, under the seat and over the link pipe of the exhaust. This effectively keeps it off the ground. My chain is a Oxford 16mm Hardcore, 1999 Hornet.

The exhaust would easily support the weight of the chain, The exhaust can support the bikes whole weight. Whether it's a good idea is another question. Those exhausts get VERY hot. It you touched one whilst putting the chain on you WOULD get burnt. It would also probably melt the cover on the chain. + what Stinkwheel said.

Removing the rear wheel to slip the chain off the swingarm would be far easier than removing the exhaust. If I had the tools and a mate it would take less than 2 minutes.

Also, unbolting the hornet exhaust would take a very long time, due to the route it takes. Infact realistically any exhaust, barring a single maybe would take a fairly long time to unbolt.

Through the wheel & round the downpipes is a bit more secure than just through the wheel or just round the downpipes. From memory I don't think there is any structural part of a 2001 Hornet that a decent sized chain can pass through. Thumbs Down

Ignore all of the above.

You can fit a 16mm chain through the hole in the swingarm, next to the exhaust link pipe.

A thief would have to remove the swingarm to get it off, which is far harder than the exhaust/rear wheel option.

HTH Thumbs Up
