Long story short. We have a Ford Telstar TX5 Ghia (same as mazda 626) with an I4 engine. It's been sitting for a bit over 2 years because it had a blown head gasket. Skimmed the head, replaced the gasket (no, not with a safety pin), put it together and the battery is absolutely dead. I didnt change the oil or fuel, and tried jump starting it with a toyota camry and it turned over pretty slow, not fast enough to be able to start it.
So, main questions:
- Is the fuel still good, or would i need to change it?
- I'm worried that if it turns over slowly when im jump starting it, it wont turn over quick enough to start it with the proper battery. Should i be worried? If this is the case, what could be the problem?
Cheers. Smile

When you say you skimmed the head, did you do that 'sandpaper glued to a table' thing, or did you send it off to get it skimmed properly?

I say the fucket battery is taking away all the energy from the jump start car. Hook it back up and leave it to get a bit charge before trying to start. Make sure you have tight connections on the jump leads and give the other car a rev when trying to start the Ford. You need a new battery anyway so you might as well go and get one.

It should be fine unless water got in your tank. You can rig up a small tank into the carb/FI until you get it running and just fill the tank up with fresh fuel. Just make sure you get a new fuel filter to catch the shit.

Ordinarly, it wouldn't, but given some of the things you've come out with previously, I wouldn't elect to eliminate any possibility.
Check earthing points, check continuity, change fluids*, charge/replace battery.

*oils, that is.

I have no idea as to what the quality of petrol in Aus is like, but if it's anything like USian standards of petrol, it might be worth trying some fresh petrol out, too.

Hi

Fuel might be an issue, but won't affect the speed it cranks over.

How much was skimmed from the head? Possible that the compression might have increased enough to cause an issue.

However, sorting the battery out first is a suggestion I would agree with.

As to the oil, I would suggest changing it soon but the biggest issue with slightly dirty (ie, normal used condition - not oil which is diluted with petrol and water or has chunks of carbon in it) oil is the acids in it which will slowly attack the metals inside the engine, and it is about 2 years too late to avoid that problem.

All the best

Keith

Can you stick the other battery straight in the car.

Both that dead batteries seem to 'suck' power from the good one and that jump leads often can't carry enough juice to fully start a car - my £45 jump leads aren't bad, the £3 one from 'home bargains' will just about do a bike.

I agree entirely. However, this is the intrepid Safety Pin Boy, and while he appears to be learning from his prior mistakes, I intend to take every opportunity to wind him up about it.

Thanks for your responses.
I have no idea how much they took off. I fitted the new battery today and it was much quicker Very Happy I tried siphoning what i thought was half a tank of fuel, but turned out to be completely dry Rolling Eyes So i filled it with fuel, attached the new battery, and after lots of turning over something finally happened- a loud bang/pop and a bit of smoke came from what looked like the airbox and/or connections from it to the carby. So, another question. Backfire? Bad timing? I'll be honest, im not 100% sure if i put the last two HT leads in the right order... Silly of me, i know, i probably-well-SHOULD have made sure it was all corrected properly. But i think it's right Laughing Could it be the result of that? Flooding? I'm slightly confused, i probably shouldnt have tried started it with someone who knows exactly what they're doing.

Hi

The HT leads do need to be the right way round, and the timing correct (and very important that the cam timing is right).

All the best

No... Confused if 'badger' is a mechanical term, im not familiar with it. Unless you're insinuating i have a small animal chilling in my intake...

lol, small animal, not mechanical term
pull the air box off, spray ether/"start ya bastard" straight into the intake/carb
turn the engine over, don't look directly into the carb when using ether,
fireballs are common,

and what would be the proper product name for 'start ha bastard'? Wink Tried starting it again today, nothing Crying or Very sad I'm beginning to have the impression that a blown head gasket wasn't the whole story for the car stopping in the first place...

I mean, i did take it slow and make sure i got everything right when putting it together. After all, i guess i had to make double certain of everything since i'm young and inexperienced. I torqued everything down to spec, and when i finished, no bolt/part was left over (unlike other projects of mine Laughing )

Not only this, there was a guy on youtube who did exactly the same thing as me, and i basically watched his videos all the time to make sure i was on the right track. And yes, his car did end up starting Laughing

I hope you are taking the piss.

You have timing marks you need to line up. If you dont your valves and pistons will meet in the middle. Crunch.

There's so many LOL's in this thread I'm now begining to doubt your sanity.

What you are saying is you've rebuilt an engine but you don't know the "correct way to do the timing belt". Rolling Eyes
