Do not buy a mid 1930s Ariel.
However I am rather pleased as I got the Badger over the standing quarter at the Wroughton Speed Trials at 15.42 seconds with a terminal speed of 79.5 mph, my personal best on that bike. Wroughton is not flat and has about an 8 foot climb and the weather was hot and humid so I am looking for a 14.5 and 85mph next month at Brighton.
These speeds are not challenging in comparison with modern bikes like Bussas but on a single cylinder machine that many say should be in a museum or scrapheap I think it is a half decent achievement. She returned 7mpg on the day.

Thanks people, Wroghton has been my nemesis in the past and I have lost two engines there due to a radical camshaft I had commissioned that broke valves and cam followers if over reved. I dropped back to the 1930 racing cam and she is going like a train and took six runs with no problems. I think I can get her sub 14 next year.

Beats my enfield into a cocked hat.

19.86s @ 64mph over 1/4 mile. That's with a tuned head BUT it does now need a bigger carb to take advantage of it.

You never know. Might hit 70mph next time

As a relative n00b and not knowing the history of the bike, a little context would be interesting; how quickly would it do a standing 1/4 if it was standard?

Wotcha.
That ain't bad at all.
The standing quarter times given in the Triumph T140 literature of the day was 14 seconds . . . . and that's a 750 twin.

As opposed to my 570cc single which returned 99 mpg on a run down to Tintern Abbey the other week.
I thought you may have done the Curborough sprint last month.

sorry to say bra, I reach that on gravel Sad

You have a 1930's single cylinder too?

lol no!!!

twins. 990 and a 1200.

a single at that speed you cant distinguish between bike vibration and the gravel.

cant think of a thumper doing 120 kmh on gravel.

thread tile is if you want to go fast.... well guess the busa as the OP says, but off road..... Can think of better ways... but the longevity and speed curves catch up

In the context of a thread about tuned 1930's singles, built to do tarmac sprints, who fucking cares what you can do Rolling Eyes

Never judge a book by it's cover.

If you'd actually bothered to read the OP, it's about a vintage bike that has been developed, over a long period of time, to compete in sprints and hillclimbs, on tarmac.

Nothing at all to do with modern bikes, gravel, or ultimate speed.

Actually, yes he does.

Nicely done, Wali. The Badger's looking pretty beastly these days, too Laughing

Krad - wind it in. You're still new here, and giving it the big'un at people who've been here a lot longer than you is not the way to impress people. Both Frost and Shaft are a lot more well-regarded than you, despite the karma rating that you've somehow accrued.
