Sorry guy's I wasn't sure if this was worth starting a topic on but, i cant seem to find a simple yes or no answer.

Can you get points for having a single line numberplate? Or is it a fine? Or what?

Probably aint illegal if the letters were the correct size other wise its the same as having a small plate.

Definetly get a fine.

Police around here seem to hate them more than square small plates.

They were around one of the bike meets a couple of weeks ago warning people about plates, seemed to be the 1 line plates normally.

The restriction is on character shape and size as I understand it. So if you have a single line that's fine providing the characters are large enough...

Unless you've got a plate like A1 its going to be a large plate.

Its not how many lines you have but as someone has already pointed out it is the size and spacing of the characters and the space between the characters and the border.

Normally a £30 non endorsable fine fixed penalty, but if it goes to court (perhaps as part of a list of offences) then being a level to fine it could cost you up to £500.

Plus if they pull you for your obvious small plate, they might look more closely at other things. Like your exhaust.

I don't agree with small plates, they're pintless and a good way of getting you pulled for everything else that's illegal on your bike Very Happy

The nobs have been closing in on loads of bikers around Sherburn recently, apparently doing everyone they can for everything possible.
Sad feckers.

I'm quite tempted to get a 7x2. You may get the odd £30 fine, but with the amount of speed camera's around these days the risk may be worth it. Also there's not much else illegal on my bike these days.

Surely the camera's can still read those plates?

I'm not entirely sure, but even if they can it would save me from cops on bridges etc getting a speed reading off the front of my bike then having a look over the other side to get my plate.

I've heard it's a £30 fine...

I'd love to challenge it though - imagine it... the copper would say that it's illegal coz it can't be read by a speed camera... you'd say yes it can, I'll prove it... and proceed to do 120mph past a speed camera to show it's readable. You get a ticket and then in court you play back the secretly taped conversation where the copper told you to do it... sorry imagination gone wild there, but it would be funny!! Laughing

And the court would ask you if you'd jump off a bridge because the copper told you. Very Happy

Thanks for all the advice guys.

I got a small plate at the mo 7x5 and only been told off once, so i've ordered a 7x2, i've also measured under my seat and theres enough space to store a legal plate for a while, so if i get pulled i'll produce that and say "i'm sorry i bought the bike with this plate, i knew it was illegal so heres the legal one i've just purchased from Halford's" Wink .

No offence but i think that the 7x5 suits your bike fine, the 7x2 ones look weird and dont realy suit bikes.

Its the spacing and size of the letters/numbers.

Get the plate "A1" and you can have a legal small plate!

I use a 8x6 (i think, 1" smaller than std) as i've only got a 6 digit reg, so you can have a smaller plate without bunching it all up too much. Getting rid of the dealer logo on the bottom makes them a lot smaller.
