Evening everybody!

I am currently riding a CPI Sprint. This uses the pushrod variant of the Honda CG 125 engine.

The bike runs beautifully, but it has developed a bit of a niggle...

After the engine heats up fully (after 15 miles lets say), the clutch will feel rough and "chatter" when pulling off in 1st, and changing gear up until 3rd,...maybe it's slipping?

Anyway I was wondering what adjustments, changes etc could be made to rectify this (if any)

cheers

Jon

Hi,

Let me be the first to tell you that the CG engine is a pushrod. When Honda introduced the CG they decided to revert to pushrod because many of their early overhead cam small engines were suffering top end wear. This was often caused by lack of oil changes. The CG was specifically designed for third world use, to be maintained with the bare minimum of tools & facilities.

The first things to check would be the free play in the clutch cable (there will be images online somewhere if you don't know how to do this), and an oil change. Is the oil old? Is the oil a car oil? Some of the car oils can sometimes cause clutch problems on some bikes, sometimes. And check the chain tension, chain & sprocket condition.

Beyond this it might be worn out clutch plates or springs, which would need changing. Worst of all would be the gears & selector forks, which means the engine has to come apart.

I've had a few bikes that have behaved like this as well, and I just put up with it. It might stay like this for ages. Maybe just wait until it gets so bad you are forced to fix it.

Cheers

I was under the impression that the most recent one was overhead cam Shocked

I was going to fiddle with the free play today, and if that doesn't make a difference I will look at changing the oil. It last had an oil change about 1500 miles ago, but its is still fairly new so might it want another one? As it happens I can only remember having the problem since the last oil change (which was with Putoline 10w40)

My CG had an issue where slipping the clutch would give a horrible banging feeling throught the whole bike, turned out to be a loose engine mount, so maybe check all fixings are tight Thumbs Up

With a 125 I'd normally estimate 1st oil change at 500 miles, and then subsequent changes at 1500-2000 intervals - these engines have a small oil capacity and it gets worked pretty hard. Which Putoline 10w40 oil was it?

I checked all my engine mounts..they are nice and tight. I cant remember the exact oil as it was done by the dealer/garage who sold it to me. Are some oils better than others?

The fact that the problem only occurs when the bike is hot seems to suggest its the oil Confused
