Following up the 'Bike as sole transport' thread (https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=245673&highlight=trailer)

I'm getting there:

Mod 1 - done
Mod 2 - done
Trailer - done
Bike -
towbar -

For the bike I want some sort of 250 (I went the DAS route, but want to start small anyway), and I like the older looking ones.

I've heard nothing but good about hondas (apart from the super dream), but nothing at all about suzukis.

Is a 1992 suzuki gn250 any good? Not compared to bigger bikes, but to other 250s.

What would I expect to pay for one?

This is quite nearby: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/280948431816?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_500wt_1205

I had one of these for 3 years.
It was alright, very tame but economical.
I seem to remember reading that the engine was good for 40-50k provided oil changes had been done. I sold mine at 44k still running fine.
It was easy to work on, but they are a bit rare so spares might be harder to come by.
A better bet is the Honda CB250 Nighthawk, which I think are from 1991 to 2007 ish. I have had 2 of these and they are better than the GN250. Better quality and better engineering, but not really much quicker. The Honda was also much more popular, with more spares etc.
That Ebay offering has very little MOT or tax. I'd pay no more than £300, maybe up to £350 if the tyres & chain & sprockets were all brand new. It could be a fun little runner, but it might fall apart next week. I'd want to hear the engine start from cold, and have a good listen for dodgy bearings etc.

I sold my GN125 a short while ago after passing my tests, she'd done 47k and was still doing the commute everyday. I'd imagine the 250 version is much the same, nothing overly exciting but a descent plodder. They did do the GN400 which would probably give you a bit more throttle.

Plenty of other 250/400's out there which will offer a bit more excitment than a GN. Wink

Thanks for the replies.

Sounds like the consensus is boring, but generally ok.

I'll go and have a look at it anyway. I'm not overly fussed about the boring aspect of it at the moment - I've managed on the City Express for a year, after all.
