Hi everyone,

I've recently passed my DAS and I'm now looking for a bike. I'm after soemthing I can use on and off road for a bit of fun. I will be a fair weather rider so it will be more of a hobby bike and I'm not planning on doing any long road journeys. I was thinking of getting an enduro bike, around 450cc, and getting a seperate set of wheels equipped with road tyres for on the road.

Does anyone have any suggestions/advice for the type/make/model of bike I should be looking for? My budget is around £2000 for the bike.

I also need some biking gear and could do with some advice with what kind of kit to get that can be used on and off road, if anyone has any?

Thanks for your help.
Adam

Oh dear. You'll want to clarify what you mean by "off road" before Tef sees this.

Green laning requires you to find some that haven't been taken over by the Angry Ecos yet.

Scrambling around anywhere except properly private land (where you have permission!) gets you a Section 59 and then a seizure.

Hi Roger,
Can you explain a bit more about such laws and power's regarding correct off road usage for bikes please?

The reason i ask is that where i live i know of a few places where there is currently disused industrial wasteground, derelict factory grounds and abondoned railways, or water works etc.

I'm planning on getting another KMX125 to have a bit of a play off road with, and i know the places im suggesting are illegal in that they are either private company property, or industrial waste ground. I would effectively thus be riding off road illegally and breaking a few laws, and i don't know how many BCF'ers do this or how frowned upon it is, as well as what the penalties are likely to be for getting caught?

If i can only ride off road in legal places where does this leave me? I assume a green lane classified as a BOAT is one of them, and so would be an MX practice track with permission. I don't know if you can ride a road registered trail bike on a private MX track, as i've only seen MX bikes ride my local tracks.

Apart from entering an organised trials or enduro event, is there anywhere else you can ride off road legally?

So private land with the owner's permission is ok to ride on? But what about if in close proximity to housing or to railways lines etc?

Is there anywhere i can go to read up on the exact to the letter law of where you can and cannot ride off road bikes?

What do most of you guys on BCF do? Are you mostly member's of off road clubs, or do you enter your bikes in competition events or ride on official MX tracks to get some off road action?

I used to just ride on legal greenlanes (BOATs or unclassified roads). You can find them on OS maps (available on Bing maps I think) but to get an idea of where to look you can use sites like these:-

https://www.trailwise.org.uk/gmaps/gmap.htm
https://bywaymap.com/

Quite a few round cambridgeshire but I found them a bit boring and have sold my CRM now.

To the OP: A DR350 might be a good bet but my CRM250 was more pokey if you fancy a two stroke. I'd look for an electric start bike though ideally.

Something smaller than a 400cc 4 stroke.

Probably looking at the 2 strokes really.. anything from a KMX125 up to KTM EXC 300 stuff.
