OK, not National importance, but after this ridiculous situation improved somewhat eariler this year it's now back to a 4-month wait. I can't imagine some poor kids face at Christmas, getting their new bike and not being able to ride it until April.

Put your right flipper up if you're waiting. <counts>

60 people? Are there 60 bikes on the island?

Isn't there some provision in the CBT for only needing it on islands larger than a football pitch? Or can't you just decide not to bother, like you do whenever else it suits?

I'll have to quote the lot!

60 people? Are there 60 bikes on the island? Answer: 87,000 vehicles registered, with more than 60,000 of those being private cars, more than 11,000 motorcycles and scooters.

Feel for you. Though Guernsey sounds a lovely place.

It must be bad for biking. Being so small. My normal ride out is about 200 miles through North Yorkshire & Cumbria on fairly quiet open speed limit roads.

I suppose France is relatively close for you, but then there's the Ferry cost.

Couldnt you come over to England for the day, get your CBT on any da you wish instead of waiting. Thats what i would do. (providing the ferry wasnt stupidly priced).

Go back in time and book it 4 months in advance.
Easiest solution.

Guernsey IS lovely. Although all the ordinary folk are priced completely out of the housing market by the tax dodging banker types, which means its normal to live with your parents till you're about 30. Its actually not bad for biking, in the sense that there are twisty roads all over the place. On the downside, maximum speed limit was 35mph last time i was there, and you can ride the circumference of the island in 3/4 of an hour. A 125 is plenty for anything you want to do, but that doesn't mean i didnt see a guy with a deathwish riding flat out on an R6.

Open your own training school! A 4 month wait means there's plenty of demand.

60. It's a Local Problem for Local People. Even at £150 a pop, that's £9K, not enough to bet a business on.

The limiting factor seems to be availability of a yard or in this case playground. Land won't be cheap there, with the aforementioned tax dodging scum.

The issue is a lack of suitable off-road places for training, not a lack of willing/able instructors, I think.

Quote:
Waiting lists for the six-hour course – which learners have to pass to validate their provisional licences – have shot up over the last three weeks after instructors were told they could no longer use Les Beaucamps High School.

I'm sure that the council could be persuaded that all those soon to be new voters shouldn't be inconvenienced in this way. An article in the local rag, or even the threat of one, should help them find a rentable space for a new bike school.

Even the existing shop could do double shifts - start an hour early, run one set of hopefulls until 11, then take them off for lunch/on road. Next group start at 11:30 and finish about 18:30. Capacity doubled!

All that assumes you're right about not lacking instructors (but can't anyone get a CBT instructor cert with ease?).

Good idea but a UK CBT is not valid in the island, nor funnily enough would a CBT certificate from Jersey. Many of the 60+ waiting are 14 years old, couldn't take a UK or Jersey CBT anyway.

There's around 400 people taking CBTs a year at £95 for 2-day course, that's not including DA or Motorcyle Riding Test, we don't have modules. But as you've said it's availability of a suitable site. maybe we could knock down a bank!

The link was for an online version of article that appeared in the local press, the States of Guernsey are fully aware of the issue - they just seem unable to come up with another suitable location.

You're right, I don't know why they don't do this, but as they are being forced to use another (smaller) school site called La Mare de Carteret (LMDC), I think there was a NIMBY reaction from neighbours and that meant resticted time available to run the course. When I did my CBT 18 months ago the same situation existed with Les Beaucamps closing, but the Specsavers Factory stepped in and allowed the CBT to take place in their huge car park plus LMDC School meaning numbers were reduced very quickly. That doesn't appear to be an option now.

There are enough instructors (one lives handily at the end of my road!) - it's just workable sites.

Whenever I go to Guernsey I'm always amazed at how many cars there are. The place is only a few km wide! Ride a bicycle! Rolling Eyes

9 miles by 5, 25 square miles, 25 miles round the coast, 300 miles of paved roads There are plenty of bicycles, but I for one do not like hills and apart from the coast road and the north, the island is basically hills, lots and lots and lots of hills. Smile
