Just been reading through the Haynes Learn To Ride All In One book dated 2008/09. An noticed this page;

https://s16.postimage.org/oza5xrcsl/P1020301.jpg

The thing that actually gets me though is the except part would have to look into it (to see if the law has changed) but that means that although stupidly you don't need headlight working if you are just using town riding 30mph speed limit and always street lamps present.

Always use my headlight anyway but this is interesting.

Does this apply to cars too? Cause not so long ago I set off late at night in a very brightly light high street without headlights on (turning them on full beam would have made zero contribution to visibility), and a police car spotted me, pulled me over and used it as an excuse to breath test me. I thought i was in the wrong...

You can get a 'daylight' MOT for bikes that you only use during the day.

I believe side lights are still needed.

Ever notice the amount of taxis that just use side lights around town.

You still need sidelights. Yes, that is the law but it is also stupid.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Nothing new, it has been in the highway code for as long as i can remember

Quote:

You MUST
ensure all sidelights and rear registration plate lights are lit between sunset and sunrise
use headlights at night, except on a road which has lit street lighting. These roads are generally restricted to a speed limit of 30 mph (48 km/h) unless otherwise specified
use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced (see Rule 226)
Night (the hours of darkness) is defined as the period between half an hour after sunset and half an hour before sunrise).

You can ride/drive in a 30mph zone with only side lights as the street lamps are at a certain distance apart for maximum visibility.

If you have lights, they must work, otherwise it's £30 for 'failure to maintain lamps'.

There was a bit in Bike magazine last month about somebody with an SV650 that was wearing a race fairing and therefore had no place for a headlight. All that happens is that you get an advisory and it's passed.

Probably because most 30mph roads are well street-lit

If you have a headlight that doesn't work then obviously you'll fail, but if you don't have a headlight then if it's not there it can't not be working!
