How long to wait to be paid

I do cover work, sometimes working in universities.

I worked for a certain Manchester based university in July last year they paid me end of Sept, they are known to be slow.

I did some work for them in November and still haven't been paid, it is always promised to be processed with the next payroll. I call them about it now and again.


So what would you do now? because I don't want to burn bridges by going all legal with them as it is well paid (eventually when I get paid) and I suppose if I did go the legal route it would cost me money and any future work with them.

But 100+ days to be paid feels a long long time..

What terms did you give them by invoice?

Send weekly invoices, detailing the amount of interest accrued on the unpaid invoice.

They'll quickly pay up when they realise they are paying interest

It's unreasonable to have to wait more than 28 days unless there's some special circumstances or agreed beforehand.

I would just ring up the accounts department and tell them politely that you need paying now please.

A week later, if you'd not received anything, send in a paper invoice.

Then phone and check they received said invoice. Then ask then, when will it be paid?

If after that you receive nothing, then I would send a letter stating if they don't pay within xx time, then you will have to charge them interest on the money owed.

In the future, when they ask you for more work, ask them then when you will be paid, because last time it was xx months, and that was unacceptable. They should respect this. Then get a contract drawn up that ensures you will be paid within a month of doing the work.

Imagine your funds are at zero and all the money you own in the world is still in their hands. You'd be chasing them up for it then! That's the attitude I'd take anyway. It's not like they're some small firm who are putting it off because they don't have the money.

I'd probably call them every day, or maybe even more than once a day, 'just to chase up and make sure it's being done'.

Universities are absurdly slow for paying. They just are.

It took four months for me to get some overtime paid out, and my workplace has managed to really piss off one of the more important suppliers that I have to interact with by making payments so late that the supplier thought they'd cancelled the purchase. As such, They're now making me wait a month before they deliver a piece of equipment that I'm getting massive pressure from management to install and set up ASAP.

As mentioned above, it's the AP department managing cash by dicking you and other small suppliers around. The people hiring you are largely unrelated to the people paying you. Entirely different departments.
Most large organisations make weekly payment runs at a minimum. Sell the AP department a sob story - my overdraft is costing me a fortune, I really need to pay for my kids glasses this month etc etc. Speak to the department signing off your employment and use it as leverage to agree interest on overdue payments, or to just factor in a higher rate, cos the AP won't pay the interest element anyway!
Most large organisations have a published payment policy. What is theirs? I'm guessing they're not complying.

Well after 181 days, I finally got paid....

I think I'm going to have to start charging them in advance.
