Yesterday made lots of miles on my new bike (new to me)

Paddy was very kind and offered free Haynes manual, which I went to get yesterday, being just odd 30 miles from me.
Just few miles to the destination, my bike just died on the junction, suburbs of Maidstone.
Took it on side walk, called Paddy if he can give me a hand, while waiting I realised it must be battery, took the seat of and waited for Paddy to arrive and rescue me.
Than a very nice bike stopped near me and ask if can help and what's wrong with the bike. Told that some one is already on his way (Paddy to the rescue). So if this decent bloke is here, thanks again man, it was very kind of you.
Paddy arrived few minutes later, with meter and yes battery was showing 11.5V, he jump started it for me and we went to his place.
Paddy was so great he checked over the installation to try find the fault, but nothing was obvious, in meantime batter has recovered a bit (12,25V). Paddy adjusted my chain and gave a look over the bike etc.
And I only came to pick up the manual Smile.

So here it is: Paddy huge thanks for your time again and for being great help and just a decent human being. You are a very nice man

I just hope I will be able to repay your kindness.

No problem at all, at least you can make use of the manual Thumbs Up It was sitting there and for someone with a willingness to tinker, it should come in handy Smile

Lot of friendlys in the motorcycle community. I once had a guy stopped when some luggage wiggled itself loose and had to pull over to secure it. A few others rode past and did a thumbs up/down to check it was nothing serious.

Out of interest did you find out why it broke down? Maybe a duff battery if it's a few years old.

Thinking regulator or something in the charging circuit.

Its "charging" at anywhere between 13 and 13.5v, which is low.

I've had a reg/rec go on me before and that caused it not to start or charge battery but didn't cause it to cut out, but then again my mechanical knowledge is pants Laughing

The bike didn't not really cut out, the idle revs where very low (paddy has increased them for me), so when I went to neutral on junction bike died, battery was low, so it would not start.

I will be checking alternator, regulator and rectifier tomorrow with the meter. Got now manual, so know what to check and how Smile
If those are OK, I will have to go bit by bit through all the electrics and find the fault or go to garage to check.

The battery is new, was just put in last week.

Today bike started no problem, but don' know what voltage on it, meter at work.

It is a bandit 600, from 2000 - if anyone maybe had similar problem, please share.

I would be very tempted to put the old battery in until you fix the charging problem. Otherwise you could end up killing/damaging your new battery. Thumbs Up

From what I've read the voltage being below 13.5v is often an alternator problem and anything above 15.5v is often a reg/rec problem.

I was linked to this guide for my problem solving: https://www.electrosport.com/technical-resources/library/diagnosis/pdf/fault-finding-diagram.pdf

Just ordered a new (second hand) alternator for my bike as I'm fairly confident that's my issue (my "charging" was reading approx 13v from the bike). Worst comes to worst and that's not it, I'll put it back on eBay for what I paid for it! Smile

JM - thanks for the link

Look at the diagram and basically it said talk to professional, as RR is part of alternator

So might do same thing, get one from ebay - less than £40 second hand.

Can't put old battery as I bough bike with new, bloke who sold me, showed me old one and said it was knackered so he just changed it before the sale. So no choice now.

Will try to check as much as I can tomorrow.

Thanks for tips

Found the problem that causing low charging voltage. The reg plate bulb was bit duff, all black, took it out and now 14v.

Really stupid thing, good I checked it first, plan was to take alternator out Very Happy
