PostPosted: 19:23 - 28 Aug 2012    Post subject: Insurance.....to bike or not to bike Reply with quote

I've completed my CBT and enjoyed it massively. I'm now contemplating doing my Direct Access and getting a CBR 600RR. However, before beginning my biking venture I thought I check out some insurance quotes.

I'm 35 y/o, been driving for 17 years, zero riding experience and live in the city centre of Manchester with secure underground parking.
Quotes ranged from £2100 to £10,000! through Moneysaving expert, Go Compare, Compare the Market and Carole Nash.

I then thought I'd quote for my parent's house in the middle of Scotland (band B on the scale) and still a low of £880!

Needless to say I am reconsidering my bike venture as much as I would like to.

I have a large budget at my disposal, but this seems like daylight robbery!
Are insurance companies intent on crippling the bike (and car) industry, by putting people like me off?!

Any (sensible!) advice/opinions welcome.

Get a quote on a Sv650 or Gs500,

not inspiring bikes but cheap and will get you a years NCB,

then buy your cbr600.

Check out some quotes!

Heh, they just don't want you on their books. They think you are to big a risk. Smile

Sports bike for first ever bike and stuff.

Go for something *slightly*different, a CBR600F (circa 2000) for instance, a ZZR etc.

I know from experience that will be far cheaper.

They don't think you're a good enough risk, hence high quotes on the RR.

BTW, A CBR 600F 100+ BHP, 150mph 0-60 in around 4 seconds (less) a ton of fun, honest Wink

**EDIT**

Oh, sorry but not for a very first bike (imo) do a bit on something else as stated above, it's about the best advice if you care to take it. Thumbs Up

Given the twists and turns of the insurance industry, any answer that we give now won't be valid in a year. Wink

No, really, all that matters is now. The good news is that you can still have a barrel of fun on a bike most of the same letters: CBR600F.

Bear in mind that you'll likely run out of road, bottle or luck trying to use the extra performance from an RR - maybe the insurers have a point? It's called "Race Ready" for a reason, it's not like "GTI" on the arse of some chavmobile.

am suprised to see that.... im in a similar situation - 33, driving a car for years. did a quote on the basis that i passed my test under 1 month ago - dont forget to change that part in the quote form - and anything under £1000 to buy. CBR600, ZZR600, Harley 883 (not under 1k but for larger engine sake), Honda VN750, GSXR600... ive tried alsorts.... theyve all been under £300 for 3rd party. only bike so far to top £1000 was a haybusa Laughing id say have a closer look at your quote form, check out the difference in fully comp - third party and look at an older cheap bike Thumbs Up

Did the same thing last year (little older though Mr. Green) wanted a Daytona/GSXR etc...Quotes were not as high as yours £800-£1000. Opted for a Street Triple (£345), done a few quotes recently to see the difference when/If I have 1 year NCB, dropped to around £400-ish. Test rode the Daytona recently and decided to keep the Street as it puts more of smile on my face Mr. Green

Buy something more sensible for the first year or so, you'll still enjoy it muchly Thumbs Up

How the hell are people getting these kind of quotes? I haven't had a single quote over £1000 and I'm 21 years old!

Thanks for the replies chaps. Fiddling around with the numbers it looks like if you make it through year 1 without a claim then the cost is much better.
My lowest quote dropped from £1600 to £520!! That's for the CBR 600F in Manch City Centre (F Code insurance).
Oh well, I guess it's probably very sensible to get a no-so sporty bike year one and then move on.

Remember that "not so sporty" is in bike terms. Once you get on a DAS training bike and open it up, that will make more sense. Wink

What bike are you insuring?

I've never paid over £250 for bike insurance (currently 21/22).

Take a look at the Yamaha Thundercat, it puts out around 100BHP. I've got it insured as my first 'big bike' for £360 TPFT. Thumbs Up
