Whats the role? Do you have any idea what format the interview will take, ie panel, competency and so on?

I have done many interviews as the interviewer and seemed to get the right person for the job, but I really do suck at being the interviewee.

I never seem to use the right buzz words and expect the interviewer to have some knowledge of the role that they are interviewing for, but the last few interviews that I have been on the questions just seem to be pie in the sky hippy crap.

Ask them what's so great about working there.

If they spaff on for ages while you nod and say "Yeah, yeah", they'll put you down as a great listener and team player.

If they say "Sod all", bail.

Either way, you win.

Don't be too early. You'll be giving them more "viewing time" on you, and its easy to let your guard down whilst waiting. 5 mins prior is my rule. Turn up exactly 5 mins prior. I always get to the venue about 30mins before hand, have a coffee in a local cafe or something, then stroll in 5 mins before.

If it is a panel interview, remember to make eye contact with everyone, not just the person who asked you the question.

When giving examples for competency questions, use different ones. So for "give me an example where you were a team player", tell them about that one time you and your mate DP's a chick to help the slag get off. Then for "Tell us about a time when you overcame an unexpected problem" don't tell them about the slag who then sharted on your mates dick. Use a totally diff scenario.

also the golden rule is USE KEY FACTS. Everyone forgets this and are never specific enough. "tell us about a time where you implemented a new idea"

"During my previous role as Sales Manager i was responsible for driving sales to reach targets. During a period where we were struggling I drew up leaflets with our current promotions and sent staff members out to hand them out and drive footfall and increase our sales" - Shit answer

"As you know, I was the Sales Manager at ABC ltd, and there was a time where we were struggling as XYZ had opened a few doors down. To overcome this, I drew up leaflets which clearly stated our current offers and we pitched these against XYZ's deals and I sent out my two best sellers to go out and pitch these to customers and drive footfall. As a result we caw a 36% increase in footfall and a 12% uplift in sales" - Awesome answer. Give them specific numbers. Make them up if you have to, but if you do, remember the figure you made up. I overcome this by always using the same 2 figures - 36 and 12. You cant go wrong that way

Good luck man!

This is a good one. I like to go in with a mind set that you are there to interview them just as much as they are their to interview you. I mean you don't want to be cocky, or come across as a smart arse, but if you honestly believe that you are a valuable asset, and know that you are a hard worker, then they should want you. Say that you would like the opportunity to show them that. If they don't, who cares, job went to a family member.

I hate it when interviewees turn up early.

It shows me they can't plan.

Every bloody time we do interviews some twat turns up 30 minutes early.

Guess what? I'm interviewing the person before you, and now you have to sit for half an hour, and I now know you can't read a watch or estimate a driving time.

Good post.

Most importantly, look back at the job description and match the key parts of the person specification with situations where you can demonstrate your competence in those areas. Then read up on the firm, their ethos etc.

Read these - this is very basic but should make sure you're drilled in giving answers to stock questions:

https://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Employment/Jobseekers/Helpapplyingforajob/DG_173785

And come up with a killer question to ask the interviewer(s). Avoid pay/holidays etc. Roger's is a good one or something like 'what performance will be expected of me in 12 month's time?' If you can't think of one, don't come up with something stupid on the spot - I've seen a couple of interviews go horribly wrong by blurting out some silly things. Just thank them for their time and say that they've answered any questions you might have had.

Also, if its a big firm, google their interview process - I bet your question has been asked before, theres loads of forums where this stuff gets talked about it.

For a trainee role being bright, keen and not a dickhead are the most important things to get across, do that and you'll be fine Thumbs Up

We were interviewing for apprentices and one guy got there over an HOUR early!!! My manager didn't want to leave him there for that long so cancelled a meeting we were about to have to do the interview early! He didn't get the position.

Good advice above, another thing is to stay awake! I mean pay attention to what's being said, take it all in, think about it for a few seconds and respond, ask them to clarify rather than answering something you're not sure about as well, if they show you around then ask questions about things. You also need to appear somewhere in the middle of wanting to do the best in the position but also wanting to progress in future.

A lot of places seem to go for the type of questions that can be a real noggin scratcher if you don't have a pre-thought-out answer. Questions such as:

Name a time when you went beyond your usual duties

Tell us about a situation you found difficult and how you overcame it

Tell us about a time when you feel you did a particular good job at...

If you were faced with a situation where you had to..... what would you do?

Those kinda questions are a pain in the arse but I know in my work they're the kind they ask, so have situations ready in your head you know you can use to answer those types of questions.

Good luck!

Be yourself, I had much better results when I allowed my personality to come through in my interviews than when I tried overly hard to be professional. They need to see some of the real you to figure out if you would be a good match for the company/team.

I like to really go in for the kill at this point...

"What do you think of my interview/How do you feel my interview has gone?"

"Are there any areas you feel I can expand on to further satisfy your criteria for the role?"

"If I am successful, when can I expect to hear from you?"

As mentioned above, always, ALWAYS thank the interviewer for taking the time to meet with you. I like to drop the wanting the job in here! Wink

Interview went well, had 2 interviews, one was from a business perspective which was alright and the questions asked were quite simple, and the other was with the manager and was less formal, which went even better, just chatted about music for most of it Laughing Now have to wait a week to see what happens. Thanks for all you advice guys Smile

Congratulations on passing Round 1. I hadn't seen that before started typing this up. I'll leave it up for the benefit of everybody, most of it will still be relevant in round 2.

1 - DO YOUR RESEARCH. Learn as much about the company as you can, and the sector of the industry it is in. Find as much current news about the company as possible. During my 2nd round interviews for my last job, one of the main things that got me the job was the fact they had just made public a major announcement in the press that morning, which only I picked up. The other 3 applicants either failed to find this out, or failed to mention it, and cost them the job. Pays to check the company news in the morning before the interview. When they ask "What do you know about (company name)", tell them everything. Start at the beginning. Don't worry about remembering everything, because for most people that's impossible. There might be a lot of important dates, if you can't remember exactly, try to remember just the year.

2 - Keep the interview flowing, if they don't have to keep asking questions about you, your work and your achievements, or having to prompt you, then that's the best way, but also don't ramble. Make it relevant, without being too superficial or too waffly.

3 - Think of some tough but relevant questions to ask them. What they do/don't like about working for the company. What's the best part of being in that industry. If the company has won awards in the industry, stroke their ego... "As an award winning company, what makes (insert company name) so successful compared to its rivals". Also ask about the future, whilst trying to incorporate recent company news into the question, for example if they've just announced a merger or contract or something, ask if that is the direction the company and/or industry is heading over the next 10 years.

4 - Don't fidget or show nervous habits (squeezing hands, playing with wedding or other rings etc). These will be noticed and can be very distracting. They know most people will be quite nervous, but you need to look and appear confident. Particularly if you'll be dealing with 3rd parties and clients.

5 - Be honest. If they ask you a question you don't know, say you don't know, BUT follow up. For example, in the aviation/airline industry you can expect to be asked some technical questions, something like what is the MTOW (max take-off weight) of the aircraft they would be flying. Nothing wrong with not knowing the answer (particularly if they haven't flown that type of aircraft before) but you need to qualify your answer with something like "but I could find that value in the flight deck QRH or OM Part B")

6 - Don't ask about salaries, holidays, bonuses etc in the first interview, unless they bring it up. You may have to take a second interview, but depending on the position there is often room for negotiation and you can do that before accepting the job. It's not wise to bring it up straight away in a first interview though.

7 - Mention your hobbies and interests, and talk about how they bring a benefit to the job. For example I was an assistant instructor at a martial arts school, so I explained how the martial arts itself had helped me to achieve a high level of self-discipline, whilst the instructing side had introduced me to teaching on different levels, training different people from adults right down to young kids, and that you have to adapt to your audience, there is no teaching method that will work the same for everyone.

8 - Finally, good luck.
