Heya,

Driving along the M11 and my speedo just stops working along with the odometer. Sad

I've only had the bike since Saturday and traveled over 200 miles on it without the problem.

Could anyone suggest to me what I need to check to find the problem before taking it to a garage?

It's a 1998 Suzuki Bandit N 600.

Many thanks in Advance.

It'll probably be a broken speedo cable - should be a doddle to replace. Run the new cable alongside the old before removing the broken one so that you get the routing right .

So, you say your clock is not working right now? It could be the cable, that goes from the front wheel to your clock. It happens once in a while, easy and cheap fix. You don't even need any tools to check it.

If it's still under warranty from a used dealer and I do believe that you're still protected by Trading Standards under the fair useage policy unless it was stated in their Ad there was problem with it begin with?

Speedo is controlled by the revolution turn of the speedo cable and therefore I would unscrew the cable near the front wheel end and see if the internal fexible metal rod has snapped clean by seeing if it pulls out straight and if it does then it's broken and you'll need a new one!

Odometer is controlled by the speedo cable as it converts revolutions of front wheel into distance travelled.

Cant remember if its front wheel driven or front sprocket driven on this, the 2000 onwards are definitely sprocket based...

Either way, if its the front wheel, cable is possibly snapped Thumbs Up

It is front wheel driven, happened to me a few weeks back. Not worth a warranty claim IMO, a few quid to fix and 5 minutes.

Same happened to me on my Cat. The connection for the cable at the front wheel speedo drive came undone and the inner drive cable slipped out and is, I assume, still decorating a road in Gloucestershire somewhere. I got a replacement cable, took the inner out and inserted it to the existing outer - 2 minute job. Now my pre-ride check always includes checking the tightness of the speedo cable nut!

Have you checked whether the cable is still connected to the back of your clocks?

My GS's speedo cable fell out once whilst I was riding; only had to screw it back in and it's not been a problem since. Thumbs Up

Heya all,

Thanks for all your replies and help.

I inspected the cable properly and noticed a small slit at the bottom. I took the whole cable off and the inner bit just snapped off!

Ordered a new cable for £8.20, fitted it today and it's working again, Yay Smile

Just another quick question about it, The bit where the cable end goes into the top is very oily in there, is this normal? I realise they do need some lubrication, but would it be worth cleaning it out and relubing it?

Thanks

It wont do any harm. You got the naked bandit? The grease may have road grit in it. I cant see it doing harm but worth a clean and re lube.

Yea got the Naked one. I wiped abit off and saw some grit in it, so I think I will give it a clean up.
