Is this possible? My XJ900 has the power to cope with many less revs for motorway cruising so it seems a wast of fuel to me but I've no idea how to change the gearing on it - anyone got any ideas other than to up the rear suspension and get a phat rear tyre on there!

Probably, but it would be horrendously expensive and difficult...

The only dissadvantage i find with shaft drive is the lack of the looseing a tooth or two option for a massive boost in power for not much money...

Some biger bikes have an "overdrive" gear for saveing fuel on motorways and such... I'm sure its possible but it wold cost way too much to be fesable, diffrent bike would be a better option if its that much of a big deal i'm affraid Sad

Well, you'll need to find someone who knows XJ900s inside out.

there is a fair chance that a rear hub from a different model of XJ900 or an entirely different model of bike will go on happily, and alter your gearing - I know on the VX800 you could fit a hub from a GS1000 shaft drive and drop the gearing by about 15%.

Otherwise, just put up with it. If you really want better fuel economy, you could go for smaller carbs, but it would cost you a bit of power. And be a total waste of time and money for a tiny change in the bike.

It would cost more than the bike is worth to downgear it.

Fair enough. The economy is pretty good but if I had some kind of overdrive it would be a lot better. I can drive along at 20mph in 5th gear at idle speed with a pillion, so the torque is definitly there!

Cheers for the info Robby but Kev is spot on there.

In my opinion the benefits of shaft drive still outweigh the downfalls.
