I bought myself a (albeit cheap) helmet, (I've been using a borrowed one).

But it whistles, It's got three vents which I have closed but it still whistles, are there any tricks of the trade to stop it?

Cheers.

If it's cheap you probably can't take out the liner and tape up the offending vent...if it the vent.

Glad to help. Wink

While it's whistling move your hand in-front of your helmet and see what position the whistling stop, this should give you an idea as to what is causing it. Then fix it with either tape or as I used to stop my intercom whistling blu-tac.

Visor position can affect the wind and so the noise.
Also any screen fitted to the bike can help.

Just as long as you don't hear voices in your head! Smile

That's what you get for buying cheap rather than a decent helmet, but you've learned now from your mistake and what brands to avoid in the future due to poor quality of workmanship and material.

Its whistling due to the airflow over your helmet. You're going to need to alter that airflow in some way to stop it.

You basically need to start playing around with the way the air flows over your helmet, and try to find out where the problem is. A simple way is by holding your hand in front of different places on the helmet to disrupt the flow. But its going to be a totally trial and error process.

Even if you find out where the problem is, the solution will be equally trial and error. Maybe you'll get lucky and its a vent/projection/gap you can stick some duct tape over. Changing/fitting a screen can cure whistling sometimes, and in other circumstances, cause it.

TL:DR - Potch about with it.

There's an almost random correlation between helmet quality and price once you go over a certain minimum level. Between myself and my girlfriend, in order of ascending price we have a Duchini, a couple of Caberg Kondas, a Shoei Neotec and a Schuberth C3. In the past, we've also had Caberg Justissimos, slightly more expensive than the Konda.

The Duchini is unpleasant primarily because it has no anti-fog solution beyond cracking open the visor. The Kondas don't have very good ventilation, but the visors are cheap and the anti-fog layer works in most situations - but you do have to crack it open in very bad weather.

The C3, on the other hand, is one of the bigger disappointments in purchases I've made. It's light and has great ventilation, but mediocre noise reduction - it's marginally better than the Konda but not by much. My old Justissimo was much better than either. But worst of all, the C3 is terrible in rain. Even when all vents are closed, the ventilation causes drops to splash onto the inside of the visor at speed; any benefits of the Pinlock are negated after about 30 minutes. The Konda, with its anti-fog coating, is clearer when wet than a wet Pinlock. Even worse, the chin pad isn't waterproof and acts like a sponge, cold and damp pressing against the neck underneath the chin. The Konda's shape goes further down at the front and blocks more weather from that area.

And getting a replacement visor + pinlock combo for the C3 is more than the whole cost of a new Konda! I like to replace my visor once a year since they inevitably get scratched when wiping off wet grit from road spray as you ride. But I'll find it hard to justify buying the combo for the C3.

The Neotec, according to my girlfriend, is light and a good fit with good ventilation; on the other hand, she finds the pinlock a big pain at night (she also wears glasses, so that means yet another set of surfaces to reflect) and it also whistles in certain positions. And the visor only has an opening tab on the left side - she finds it awkward to open when holding the clutch and stopped at a light. Overall, she thinks it's too expensive for the improvement it has over the Konda.

There's no substitute to living with a helmet for a while in a range of weathers, speeds and bikes. Price doesn't guarantee quality; at best, it buys you specific features you want, but after that it's down to how it works with your combination of bikes, riding posture, head shape, weather, etc.

Ear plugs work well, get some decent ones. You could try putting a bit of extra foam in but that tends to pull the ear plugs out Mad

Thanks all,

I found the neck warmer worked a treat, only a slight whistle gets through every now and then. It's the rear right vent that's the offender, I'm gonna look at taking it off and putting some gaffa tape underneath it.

As I said in my own lengthy essay, my girlfriend's Shoei also whistles on one of her bikes.

I had a shoei xr1000 and a shoei XR 1100 - the XR1000 was horrendous for wind noise . My Suomy helmets are a bit quieter, but not by much. I dont care, i wear ear plugs or headphones when it bothers me...

Good idea. Those cheap chinese knock-offs are great value. While you're at it, get yourself an jPhone, some Niike trainers, Lous Viutton luggage and a Rolax watch.

Thanks for the review of the C3 barrkel. I was actually considering this as my "decent" helmet to replace my flawed AGV.

So glad I read your post before spending a small fortune on a helmet that sounds pretty dire for such a high price.

Thumbs Up
