I'm gathering myself toghether a small "get me home" kit (incase), which will be in a pencil case under my seat.

Which torch should I get;

The single AAA size:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Maglite-Boxed-AAA-Solitaire-Torch/dp/B0001P0EN2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1346488101&sr=8-2

The double AAA size:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Maglite-Boxed-Mini-Torch-Blue/dp/B0001P0ES2/ref=sr_1_83?s=lighting&ie=UTF8&qid=1346488303&sr=1-83

Or the double AA size:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Maglite-M2a106-Mini-Torch-Blister/dp/B00006WNPD/ref=sr_1_77?s=lighting&ie=UTF8&qid=1346488345&sr=1-77

(Ignore the cost factor etc, links are there incase anybody wants dimensions, weight etc).

Has anybody had any experiences with these torches, in particular has anybody found certain ones sufficient or insufficient for darkness "quick fixes".

Cheers all.

You'd be better off with one of the small single LED headtorches than a mini Maglite, leaves you with two free hands if need be when you need to use it. Granted it wont fit in your pencil case but it'll take up next to no room if you stick it in a small sealable freezer type bag and leave it somewhere else under the seat.

Just get yourself two cheap LED torches, they should only cost a couple of quid.

Yup go with LED torches. Torches with bulbs are a bad idea. Also, no need to buy brand name torches for this kind of thing.

Thanks all,

I've ordered a head LED torch and a small hand LED torch too, I think both'll fit under the seat fine.

Got both for less than £4 too (excluding batteries).

The problem with high power LED torches (5w ish and up) is that to get the best from them you need to use a special (expensive) battery, and the different brands of battery are very hit and miss.

I'd go for an LED torch like Rolson. Got a pack of 3 for £3 in a supermarket a year or two ago.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rolson-Tools-61760-Torch-Batteries/dp/B002Y5XNBM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1346612195&sr=8-1

Only 2 maglites I've ever had are a 3D one which I bought as much for its use as a weapon as a torch, and a little 2xAAA because that fitted perfectly in the pen pockets on my flying suit.

Is it for genuine emergency use? Or just for having around the house?
Personally my everday carry is as follows:
Fenix E01 (Single AAA, about 10 lumens - similar output to AA Maglite) on keyring.
Zebralight SC80 (Single AA or CR123), 220 lumens for an hour - about 10 times the output of a 4D mag. Usually runs on rechargeable 123s, but I keep a box of throwaways in the car and house (10 cost 14.99 from kmnw.co.uk) In a pinch it runs on sttandard alks. That one lives in my pocket.
They're the two that get the most use anyway - the rest of the collection (about 20 or so) tend to just be when out and about.

If its just to sit under the seat I'd reccomend an Alpkit Gamma, https://www.alpkit.com/shop/cart.php?target=product&product_id=16345&category_id=250

loaded with lithium AAAs (alkalines are pretty useless after a while). I reckon that gives you the best chance of having useable light for long enough to fix something. Don't underestimate the usefulness of a dim mode, if you're doing something close up too much light can be as bad as not enough.

To be honest no, and they actually get very little use in the actual dark - but you;d be surprised how often in my day job (general officey stuff) it gets used. Usually followed by 'why do you carry a torch round' from the person who's just had their day made much easier by the fact that I do.
