Sup guys. I'm planning on getting a 125 next April when I turn 17. Due to the law change, will I still be able to have the 125 on a cbt as long as it's learner legal?

OK, here's how you'll have to do it.

Arrow At 17, do a CBT and ride a 125 on provisional entitlement with L plates.
Arrow You can do an A1 test on that bike to get an A1 license, but all that buys you is taking off the L plates, pillion passengers and motorway use. No bigger bike for you.
Arrow At 19, you can sit an A2 test on a 395cc+ 25 (maybe 20)-35kW bike (e.g. a GS500) and get an A2 license. This will allow you to ride any size of bike making no more than 35kW and not restricted down from a bike that makes more than 70kW. Think that GS500 again, or a restricted 600/650. It will be possible to do this test yourself on your own larger bike with some hoop jumping, but because of the hassle in insurance, getting to the test centre and practising legally, the majority of people will go via a training school and pay several hundred £££ for the privilege.
Arrow Two years after getting your A2 license, or when you reach 24, whichever comes sooner, you can sit exactly the same test again, but this time on an A3 (aka A) 595cc+ 40kW+ (probably 50kW+ by then) bike, e.g. an ER-6n. That will get you an unrestricted license to ride anything that you want.

This is a longer and more expensive process than at the moment, and it's really up to you how you play it. 35kW is plenty of power, more than the 25kW restricted limit at the moment, but you'll have to wait longer to get it, and pay again to upgrade it.

Seconded. Get a 33bhp restricted licence if you pass before January on a 125. In two years you can ride anything.

Otherwise ride a 125 on CBT up to 19. Do your 46bhp restricted test as soon as possible after you turn 19.
Wait two years then do your unrestricted test.

Thank you for that as it answers a question I know my lad will ask.

At 19 I suspect he'll be wanting that restricted 600/650 (35kW). However, I'm not that sure it will be worth it in terms of insurance.

No you don't, and that's what takes the piss.

You're fine to skip the A1 test altogether, and I imagine the vast majority of 17 and 18 year olds will do so. Why bother doing more than a CBT when you're stuck on exactly the same 125 until you're 19 either way? Just do your 6 or 7 hours, then ride around without having done any more training, or learned any theory, or done hazard perception, or passed any DSA tests.

If you make it to 19, yay for you, now see if you can unlearn all the bad habits that you've picked up and fool a DSA examiner for 40 minutes to get your A2 ticket.

It's utterly bass ackwards, and if you can figure out how it will in any way contribute to road safety then please let me know because I'm flummoxed.
