hello everybody thanks for visting my post i hope you can help. im having trouble with my bike i bought it not long ago its a honda cg br-j 1988 model.

basicly the problem is my engine packed up so ive put a new engine is its the cdi version as you know my current bike used the old points type and not the cdi type so ive had to strip the old loom and put the cdi loom in i had spare.

so with this all done the bike has the cdi engine in with the new cdi loom ive manged to kick the engine over and it works but the battery doesnt seem to be charging. i put my multi meter across the battery with the engine on and the voltage is 12.57vdc i increase the revs and the voltage is still the same so im concerned weather the generator is working ive read through the haynes manual but i cant figure it out.

is there a way of checking the voltage output of the generator with the wires that come out of the engine it self were it connects to the loom off the top of my head theres like 6 or 7 wires that come out of the sprocket cover of the engine i know one of them is a ground and the other is netural wire the others i dont know looking at my scematics they seem to go off to the cdi and reg and that.

all i know is ive connected the the igition to the loom/regulator and coil and spark plug and the connector that comes out of the generator.

if anyone can help id much appreactie it thankyou mike Smile

Not that much help but based on the old wiring diagram (they are virtually the same). Might help you sort the wiring out when you get round to it.

stick your multimeter probes in before the rectifier and see what its giving out there

ok so i checked the pin outs on the reg/rectifier with it disconnected. i turned the engine over and checked each pinout with engine idle

i then put some revs please note i did not pull full throttle as i dont want to blow the engine up. also note i dont have a rev counter so i cant say but there apears to be some activity going to the reg/rectifier.

red wire = idle 1.92vac / 8.0vac with revs

yellow wire = idle 12.04vac/ with revs 50vac

white wire idle = idle 1.95vac/ with revs 70vac

green wire is earth 0.0v

hmm follow the wire down to the generator for any breaks and see if there's a connector further down the line to check again

i wil do that now after i have my brew. ive spent the morning doing the lights ive got all indicators and break light and lights on speedo working i have not connected up the front light yet but will leave that till last as it just gets in the way when im sorting out the wiring in the head shell.

and when i kick over as i figured with all the lights plus the horn on the gen is being pushed to power it all. so much so the horn barely sounds the speedo lights go crazy when the idicators are on.

the lights are fluctuating with the indicators this tells me that the battery is not inline or powering anything on the bike. yet i have it connected it up to the loom and i know 99% ive wired it up correctly any ideas?

shurly no charge or not the battery should drive the rest of the lights its like the generator is the only thing powering it all its mad!!
